I have lost steering and brakes. The TA is not functioning. I took the MCV off to check the key and the pump gear, but seems to be good. So now I do not know where to look next. Need some suppestions.

Thanks!

Croz, From experience I know this can be a real problem to find, I have an 856 with new pump, rebuilt MCV, and it will still bother when temp dips close to 0. Run 5 gal over full, but found one thing that seems to work. When tractor sets for overnight or more leave it parked slightly down hill. Until I have a reason to take it complety apart and hopefully find the real problem it works. Good luck, Chuck

If the pump is good and you are not finding any blown o-rings, either the 3 GPM orifice has a problem or the flow divider valve is stuck. Most likely the valve is stuck. I don"t remember if the orifice coming out will cause all the oil to go to the oil cooler or to the steering. I"m at home and my manuals are at the shop. I think it goes to the steering.

The flow divider valve is located below the TA dump valve. the orifice is in the port with the 5/8 head plug below the flow divider. If the valve is stuck you will need to remove the inner and outer plates to pry out the valve..

IH manuals say that you must replace the MCV if the flow divider is scored, no service parts available. It appears to me that excess leakage between the spool and will only cause the spool to travel a smaller distance to compensate for leakage. I have polished many spools and housings to free them up and have never had a problem with any of them. If the tractor was in warranty I replaced the MCV otherwise I just repaired them.

As long as you have the pump out, fill it with oil pump one thumb over the pressure port of the pump (little hole) and turn with the other hand if you can hold thumb on the hole with any trouble pump is bad.

1. Check the fluid level.

2. Check the filter.

3. Do the rear hydraulics and PTO work?

If nothing works look for a worn out spline or sheared rivets on the rear of the clutch pressure plate assembly. Worn splines are noisy for a little while when the first fail but will become less noticeable as the get worn down from slipping. Sheared rivets generally make no noise. As long as you have the MCV off you can try turning the pump drive gear on the lower shaft. It should only turn with the engine.

If everything is OK mechanically you most likely have a suction leak between the clutch housing and the rear frame. A worn pump may not be able to pump air fast enough to overcome the air in the system. You can work around the suction leak by running the system about five gallons over the full mark.

Thanks Owen. The three point and rear remote works fine. The drive gear is solid with the engine not running, so I don't think is it the drive gear. I always run my tractors 5 gallons over full. I still think it is in the MCV. Thanks!

Why would you think it is in the MCV? All three functions are down.

Put a pump in it.

Allan

I filled the pump with oil and turned it like you said and I could not hold my thumb on the whole without oil coming out all over. So it making pressure, I think. The reason I do not think it is the pump is because that pump was new 500 hours ago. Thanks!
