About a month ago I got my blade mounted on my SC. I have it ready and waiting for a good snow. Well it has snowed a little so far but nothing to get worked up over. Well Last week a neighbor came over and we talked about "stuff" He said " I see you get your tractor ready for snow. I said yep, shes ready. Soon his wife brings over some cookies that the had too many of.
Well today another neighbor called. Hello neighbor this is Mrs Pimplebottom " name is changed to protect the innocent"third party image

Mrs Pimplebottom was my kids 5th grade teacher. She HATES hunting, tractors, trucks, and anything to do with country life style, I live a country life style.
Well she brings a plate of "goodies" and we talk. Soon she says " Well you know that I don't have a big drive way but do you think you could plow it out if we get some snow? I said I don't know mam, seems that I heard you didn't like my tractors. Oh no, that could not be farther from the truth. I enjoy them a great deal. Sure Mrs pimplebottom, I think we can help. Although The neighbor on the other side of you is having us over for dinner next week. Do you know what it is about?
I am sure they all just have the Christmas spirit.
Ya Right! Ron

Whenever we would get a real bad snow, I would make sure that all the neighbors were plowed out. Most of them were elderly and I always felt that it was better to plow them out and not worry whether or not they compensated me for it. In case of an emergency, it would be a whole lot easier for the emergency squads to reach them. That to me is far more important than money or worrying about the wear and tear on my equipment. I can repair the equipment, I can't replace one of my neighbors.

After surgery on my right foot I've been laid up for more than two weeks now and have another month to go before my foot will be allowed to push on an accelerator, brake or hydro pedal. Even as I write, I hear the sound of one of the neighbors blowing out my driveway after yesterday's wind and snow here in NE Iowa. With my wife driving, we should be able to make it to church and thank God for good neighbors. They're great. I'd sure like to be out "playing" in the snow!

Dad keeps his neighbors plowed out every year. He collects country hams, several messes of fresh fish throughout the year, and even gets 60 acres of free hay for plowing one out. One moved 100 miles and hired dad to haul 6 loads of horses, he hasn't seen her since. Cost him almost 300 in fuel, and got nothing in return for that. My neighbors on the other hand, always manage to skip any compensation of any kind. One did give me a fith of Wild Turkey one year. I would rather had the ham.

It sometimes has it's rewards.

I have an old '78 Chevy 4x4 with a plow on it. We also once had a neighbor across the road I didn't much care for, and it was mutual. But--once when we had a snow and I got done plowing our driveway, I thought, "What the hell", and while the plow was warmed up I went over and did his. I just plowed his drive and left without seeing him.

He told my wife later that he had been down with a bronchial infection and needed to get out to see a doctor.

Me and dad always plow out the drives of friends and neighbors after we finish the feed mill lot. I just love the look of surprise and happiness on peoples faces after they see they can get out to go Christmas shopping.

Merry Christmas Jakey

My dad always plowed everything in a mile radius. It seems more people were willing to give him a 20 than not (he never asked). Now those folks (or their children, or his children) plow him out. Goodness-gracious (90% goodness 10% gracious) JimN

The old feller ( my neighbor) that passed away this summer used to plow all our drive ways. He did it for nothing for 20 years. My son bought his blade in October at his farm sale. I don't think i will have the time he had but I am sure that I will be keeping my favorite neighbors drives plowed.

I hope they are good cooks!third party image Ron

Well if you are like most of us, when you saw they were having trouble getting out you would have plowed it out anyway, for nothing. Might as well enjoy your treats.

When my dad was alive, and we were farming full time, we spent hours and days helping out folks and doing things when we probably should have stayed under the covers. Maybe it all works out in the end though.

It seems I tore up more equipment helping out some of these people who didn't have a tractor. They wanted to live way back in the woods, but when it came to snow removal, they had none. I tore up my blower once when I swallowed up a fence post buried under the snow. I was always hitting something with the plow that was immovable that they would forget to tell me about. I spent more time welding up my equipment than it took to plow them out....

When I had a truck with a plow, I would plow all the neighborhood little old ladies drives for apple pies. The younger ones couldn"t make apples pies. When the wife moved in she asked why there were so many apple pies in the freezer. The older ones either died or moved. I think she told the younger ones I wasn"t plowing anymore. Merry Christmas, Bill

Ron: I like that, your almost more popular than Santa Clause. You'll have to pick out the neighbor with a red shinny nose to guide you through the Idaho blizzards.
