I have a Super M tractor but I am not sure of the year or if it is actually an MTA or not. I was hoping someone could inform me on how to find out this info using the serial # of the tractor. The serial # is F2522J. I would greatly appreciate ANY help. Thank you in advance.

The M&W hand lever has only a knob on top of it and comes out of the left brake which is a band brake because of the M&W clutch. On the SMTA The T.A. lever is on the left hand side of operators platform and the bottom pivot is I think a little behind the left brake. There is a squese handle at the top of the lever. In direct drive the handleis ahead almost to the clutch pedal. To activate the T.A. pull the lever back and it latches in the rear position. To go back to D.D. squese the unlatching handle and slowly allow the lever to go ahead. The handle on the right hand side has a push button on it that locks the handle in the forward and back positions and controls the live power takeoff. Because the SMTA usually came with L.P.T. it had no need for a snap-over hand clutch on the left brake. If super M or SMTA had live hyd. there would be two hoses mounted to a pump that was mounted just ahead of the dist. I hope I have not confused you. Armand

Armand, with respect, it is not advisable to move a TA lever forward slowly. The lever should move as rapidly as possible without being allowed to spring on its own. The transition from Reduction to Direct and Direct to Reduction is done fast. Three primary causes of premature TA rear are Slow lever movement either direction, Moving the tractor faster than the gear it is in with the TA back, and poor adjustment. A fourth cause is not using it (they thrive on continuous use under tough conditions. JimN

I tried the URL and it doesn"t always work for me. When I got onto the site, and went to the Super M and scrolled down to the bottom to the comments, it said that the Super MTA has the torque amplifier and independent PTO, and was built only in 1954. The Super M family was replaced by the model 400.

There is a Farmall Super M links: Brian"s Farmall page: information on the Super M.
www.geocities.com/yosemite/geyser/2544/farmallsupm.html. Amplifier means double gearing. Hope this helps you out. I may have found this same info for you or someone else before.

1952 regular Super M. The Super MTA was only built in 1954, so you have a Super M.

I think your right about the lever being for a hand cluth. The hosing on the lever says M&W hand clutch but not on the left break. I did'nt see a serial # fron the research and info pge to the left to match my serial # either. any other ideas, thanks

Chicago SM serials were from 501-12515 for 1952. J refers to Rockford clutch.

Bill, not to be to picky, but SM's were built at Rock Island Illnois Farmall works plant and Louisville's Tractor Works plant. The F is RI and L for Louisville. Don't think any where built in Chicago.

You are correct, however the Rock Island built tractors wore a Chicago serial plate. Hence my reference to a Chicago serial number.

Sounds like a super M with an M&W hand clutch. Does the left brake cover say M&W on it?

Just look to the left side of this page under Research & Info and then Serial Numbers.

looks like its a 1952. stage 1. battery is under the gas tank. probably has a belly hydraulic pump, could have a live pump mounted behind the distributor.

Thanks for the reply: You are right about the battery being under the gas tank but i dont know about the hydrolic pump location. There is a long lever on the left side of the seat that I was told was for the torque amplifier , does that sound correct to you ?

sounds like an m+w hand clutch like the other guys said. it is mounted where the lt side brake housing is. super mta will be longer lengthwise than a regular m or super m. and if it was an smta the battery would be under the seat.

Seems it is a Super MTA. There was also a long lever to control the live PTO, but I think that was to the right of the seat.
