renting a two inch pipe threader?

I want to help my brother in law get his H back together as some point. We have to cut out the old torn up exhaust pipe and put a new one in. I know I need to tap out the threads when the old one comes out, but don't want to buy a pipe threader for a one time use.
Does anyone know where one can be rented?

JT said: Mike, I have a 2" tap, if I can find it, I would send it to you to use if you will promise to send it back to me, lol, it was quite pricey, 30-35.00, so I really do not want to loose it. If you do not find one locally. Email is listed if you wanna contact me about it.

Jim, I appreciate that offer, but that is just too much to ask. I'm sure we'll find something when the time comes. Or maybe we won't need it at all. Who knows.

I helped a friend tap a manifold on a Farmall M,We used a good tap, large cresent wrench,a peice of pipe, and I thought we were going to turn the tractor over,I doubt if a good vice would hold it.

Tom Widnsor said: (quoted from post at 16:07:58 12/20/07) Mike, Get yourself a length of 2 inch pipe -- 5 inches long, then take a hack saw and cut crosswise in the threads so that you have 6 or 8 slots accross the threads and use this to clean up the thing.

Tom's suggestion of making a thread chaser works well. The taper on the nipple, by definition, is the same as in the manifold. How could it not be ?. . . they're both pipe thread and they eventually have to fit together.

Next question, which you haven't asked, is what you're going to do for a new exhaust pipe. Threading 2, or even 1 1/2 pipe with a borrowed die is no fun ( I just finished cutting the 1 1/2 pipe threads on my 340). I wasn't so lucky this time, but check a local metal recycler. On my last tractor rebuild (Cub) I found a 24 inch length of 1 inch SS pipe, already threaded, that I paid $5 for. Looks pretty slick!

Huh???

Every hardware store, plumbing or electrical trade jobber, or "home center" has 2" threaded pipe, threaded nipples, or can thread it. I doubt if there is a single community over 5000 people where the threaded pipe cannot be purchased new.

you bet

I wanted stainless steel (SS). Purchased a 15 inch joint on line and threaded it. Largest threaded nipple you can buy is 10 inches long. A little tougher than black iron.

I needed one for the exact same purpose, I found a rental place and paid $4.50 for 24 hours. As for leverage, I used a BIG crescent wrench, it worked great.

I wouldn't try that. You don't have the right taper on a threaded pipe.

My freind who runs a machine shop wouldn't rent his out for less than new price. But hedoe do manifolds for just 10 bucks. Takes him about 10 minutes. Call around machine shops and plumbers. Someone will do it for not much money. I also picked up a 2 inch plug. That goes in the manifold when the tractor is stored for the winter.

If it is in good and tight the threads will probably be OK. It's the loose ones that have been rolling around for years that need work.

JT, you are more generous than I am. I have s complete set upto and including 2" but I would never loan out any of the big ones. It is just not worth it.

Will I get it back and if I do, will it be damaged? On top of that, it is doubtful that a shade tree mechanic could actually use it. A tap that size needs a torque multiplier if metal is going to be cut.

That brings up the question of where to do it. Bolted to the tractor or in a vise. If the manifold is fragile, it will have to be done in a vise and that means a big vise.

Most manifold threads can be made serviceable with a good cleaning via sandblasting.

Yea, you are probably correct, and every once in a while I get burnt, But I like to help people and I gess that is why the business I run is not a high profit operation like all the others in town, I trust too much and try to help people if I can.

Just buy a 2-inch nipple at the hardware store and cut one end off.

You dont need a threader you need a tap. Call around to plumbing shops to see if they have one then take it there and let them do it. They probably dont rent them but they would do it for you.

I don't know if they would have it, but you might check with places that rent tools... Locally I know that Home Depot, AutoZone, and Checkers/Schucks/Cragan rent tools. Sorry I can't tell you if they have a 2" pipe threader, though...

see if you have a plumber nearby, have him chase the threads for you, maybe slide him some booze money. if the old pipe is froze in there, cut the pipe off so you got maybe 1/4 inch left above the top of the manifold. then use a hacksaw blade and cut down almost to the threads. take a chisel and drive the pipe in away from the threads and kind of peel it out of there.

I think you will find 2" NPT taps for cheap money on eBay. Used taps can be freshened up with a die grinder run down the flutes. You might find a few cheap taps at a flea market.

For the most part, if an existing pipe is still securely screwed into a manifold, you won't need to chase the manifold thread after the nipple comes out.
