I am looking at a 78 IHC tandem axle DT466 WITH THE 13 SPEED TRANNY.
Any thoughts concerning this type of truck would be appreciated.
I use a dump truck for my personal use in a small rental business--driveways etc.
Thanks

Sounds like my truck is similar. 1980 S-1954 tandem axle, 466, 13sp RR, Hendrickson suspension. I bought it new. Never weighed less than 34,000 lbs when I was using it every day. Usually ran it at capacity which was 48,000

I don't have experience with anything newer. It would seem to me that older trucks in good condition should have a premium value in that they are not loaded with computers and expensive fuel systems. Like Bob said, the truck is under powered but I see that as another virtue with $3.50 fuel.

People used to kid me about having a school bus engine. I never liked the rotary pump and changed it out for an inline. The aluminum PS pump was replaced/serviced four times under warrantee. Otherwise, no problems. Thinking about puting it back on the road with antique plates.

We've had a similar 466-powered, T/A IHC grain dump on the farm for 15 years. The only significant difference it's got a 15 speed transmission.

It's been a solid, reliable and economical truck. About the only (minor) downside is it's somewhat underpowered compared to the other trucks on the farm (one each Mack, Freightliner and KW with 300 - 350 HP Mack, Cat and Cummins engines). However for local farm hauling the old IHC does the job just fine.

DT 466 Engine is one of the best engines out there and a 13 spd is a great transmision, but in our neck of the woods I don't really see a individual owning a tandum, CDL,medical card, DOt number, commercial insurance,Apportioned Tags, and Fuel Sticker, just to get it on the road. You will have to do a lot of hauling to make it pay for itself.Just my 2cents.

Weldin thanks for the thoughts. Have the CDL and air brakes addition. In our county the weighmaster lets us use the farm log plate if we just haul for ourselves and have our name and address on the truck with the wording--not for hire. He doesn't speak for the state diesel bear and that would be different????
We stay in our ccounty and don't haul for hire.
