I am having problems with my farmall B, when I hook up my battery, my battery to ammeter wire gets hot, and the ammeter shows discharge, can anyone help me with this problem, I'm sure I have it wired right because I followed a manual but maybe if I saw another diagram for a 1941 Farmall B. Thanks,

Matt - Take a real close look at the backside of the ammeter! From your description (battery to ammeter wire gets hot and ammeter show discharge when the battery is connected...) there's a good chance the ammeter post NOT connected to the battery has become grounded.

Check carefully the insulating bushing in the clamp that holds the ammeter into the panel. The bushing can crack/crumble resulting in a short to ground at the ammeter.

However also check the wiring between the ammeter and the cutout/voltage regulator. A ground in this wire - or a short in the cutout/VR - could also be the cause.

Cant be wires correct or you wouldnt have wires getting hot. Make sure the 6v from the ammeter goes to the batt term on the regulator. Field from reg to field on gen and A term to gen term on the reg.

First make sure all the wiring is in good condition and is the correct gage wire. Make sure all connections are good. Sand off the "points" in your cut out or regulator (whichever you have). Make sure there is no water in the regulator/cut-out. Here is a link to Bob's wiring diagrams. Make sure your tractor is wired exactly how the diagram shows it. Choose the correct diagram for your tractor.

Matthew, if its a fairly high discharge the cutout relay (regardless if a 2 wire stand alone or part of a Voltage Regulator) may be sticking closed. If so the genny will get warm also n the battery run down fairly soon. I know this "dude" who would tap on them n see if it unsticks and if so maybe remove the cover n lightly file n clean n polish the relay contacts which is a band aid cure for a while At least.

See if it stops discharging if you remove the wire from the BAT terminal on the cutout relay or VR???? If so sounds like shes sticking closed as glen was also thinkin

In the alternative remove the gennys belt and if she spins like a motor Id again say the relay is sticking.

Buttttt if its NOT that then youre left with a short somewhere or shes not wired correct. If she still discharges with the wire removed from the BAT terminal then you gotta get a voltmeter and/or a test lamp n start tracing down the short.

Start by removing wires one at a time until you see where the bad short circuit is.....

SURE ITS WIRED CORRECT?? The ammeters supply terminal wires to the batetry/starter while its other Load terminal wires to BAT on the VR or Cutout relay PLUS feeds hot battery voltage to the switch.

A short or a sticking relay is whered Id start lookin ifffff fff shes wired right?????

One more question about it being wired correct is YOU SURE THE CUTOUT RELAY (if thats what it has) ISNT WIRED BASS ACKWARDS??? Have you changed the tractor battery polarity???

Have you checked out BobM's library of wiring diagrams? It's a treasure!

Alternator setups are in the lower part, different variations for mag vs coil ignition, single-wire alterntors, etc., so choose carefully.

I'm curious, too, as to what manual you got your current setup from.

sounds like you have a short somewhere. follow the wire from the ammeter to the voltage reg or cutout relay. disconnect that wire at the reulator (or cutout relay) and see now if it still shows a drain. be sure wire isnt touching anything. if it still shows a drain, there is a bare spot somewhere in the wire from the meter to the reg. if not look at regulator. tanke the cover off and see if its all rusted up.
