My H is driving me crazy. One day it runs great, next day it acts like it is running on two cylinders. She'll start fine, idle good, but as soon as that clutch starts coming out, it spurters and acts like it is either missing cylinders or choked for gas. I think I've replaced everything. I got a rebuilt carb, new fuel lines and sediment bowl, new distributor cap and rotor, plugs, and wires. I also converted it to 12V, so it has new wiring and a new coil. I talked to a friend that mentioned his H does the same and has been doing it for 15yrs. I'm guessing if we both have this problem it must be common. Any advice?

My SH does exactly the same thing... I have done everything, just as you have. I finally checked te side to side play in the distributor shaft and sure enough, its bad. Check your distributor! Ill bet its worn out!

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to check that out tonight. I'm going to assume that there should be no play at all in the distributor shaft?

Mark: And also, as I have just learned, if you have a battery type ignition, it could be your distributor needs a rebuild. Remove the cap and rotor. Then see if the shaft can be wiggled side to side, like a loose tooth. If so, your points won't stay set while running and it will run rough much of the time. mike

Hey Mark, where are you located? I am near Greensboro. My H does the same thing, and it is very cold natured. It runs well when it warms up. The advice that the others have given is good. Double check everything that has been mentioned relating to fuel and spark. The biggest problem that mine faces is my lack of time that would allow me to use it more. They like to be worked hard.

Hey Jim, I"m right down the road from you in the Bear Creek/Pittsboro area. There has been a lot of good advice given so far on this topic. Seems like the points would be a good place to start. I replaced them back in the spring and haven"t really looked at them since. Seems like they can be a good area for troubles. Have you heard much about the Pertronix electronic ignition systems that replace the points? I"m wondering if it is worth the money to install one and eliminate the points all together.

Unless you use your H an awfully lot, I do not know if the electronic ignition would pay for itself. The points in my H have been there for years, probably 8 to 10. I have a 140 that has a little play in the distributor, but I cannot tell you the last time I changed the points. I suspect you may have something else going on, but to cover all possiblities, you can check them. I would even consider you checking the valve adjustment when the engine is hot. I believe the farmalls tend to do better when the valves are just slightly loose. You could always have trash in a carb passage. A fix may be as simple as enriching slightly the high speed fuel mixture. There are many possibilities, but they are easy to check.

It looks like you replaced the cap, rotor and wires. How about the points and resetting the timing ? If you have not changed the points, run a points file or even a folded over piece of 400 grit sand paper through them and see if that helps.

Every time my H acts like it has a carb problem, I change the points. Usually that fixes it.

It is not common. Sounds like a fuel starvation problem.

If you have the fuel cap with the gage in it check for pieces of cork in fuel. The cork floats have a history of coming apart. Armand

Did you check for leaks in the intake manifold.Sometimes they also need a valve job,

Maybe stuck valve? or it the timming off alittle?? or there could be something floating in the tank that lets fuel out sometimes but then it blocks it the other time... Had that happen to me and turied out a peice of the old cap gasket was floating around and would occasionaly block the fuel outlet.
