Clifford, the CaseIH website has a good exploded view and parts list of the steering. You can also print it out for reference. David.

If the pitman arms move together, there is a small tapered pin that rides in the cam tube, it looks like a large worm gear. The tapered pin fits in one of the gear sectors, I think the LH side and follows the spriral groove in the cam tube. Yours could have broken off or just wore out. The one on my 350u was worn so I ground the head off and made a new one. Theoretically they are supposed to rotate and wear evenly, but mine had flats on the sides. A good machine shop should be able to make and install one for you.

Yeah! That's what it looks like. I knew my description of a sector gear didn't sound quite right, but it's been about 5 years since I had mine all apart.

Clifford: I think the first question here, is it a Farmall or Utility?

Clifford: I noticed Mike responding as though it were a Farmall, figured best to get this back on track. I had a gut feeling it was a utility, just from your wording. I can't be of much help on the utility steering.

First you have to do some investigation and get more info. Is the wheel just rotating on the shaft? Or is the U joint still attached? Unless they changed something between the H and 300, there should be a U joint where the steering shaft changes angles under the hood. If all that is working as it should, then you will have to get into the upper part of the bolster to see if the worm gear is messing with the steering gear.
Before you can fix, you have to know what is broke.

In that case, the worm gear at the end of the steering wheel shaft is either loose on the shaft, or you've busted a tooth off the worm gear sector on the steering output shaft (I think the left one has the worm gear sector). In any case, you can't fix it with the steering gearbox in the tractor, it'll have to come out.

BTW, that'd be the case whether it was manual or power steering.

I don't know how the worm gear is attached to the shaft. The reason I had to take mine apart was that the output shaft bushings were badly worn, the worm shaft was okay, so I didn't mess with it. If it's keyed to the shaft, it's probably a busted key and easy to fix. If the sector gear is busted, the busted tooth should still be in the gearbox, and can be welded and re-ground. The manual steering does take a good effort, so that might have been the extent of the problem. While it's apart, though, you can check it out and replace the bushings and bearings. I had to have bushings made, the shafts built up and reground, but yes, most anything can be fixed.

sounds like you may have a 300 utility. if so, there is a long shaft running from the pitman arm on the left side of the tractor from the left front wheel to just below the steering column at the the base of the operators station. if you are turning the steering wheel and this shaft is not moving back and forth, the problem is going to be from the steering wheel up to and including the gearbox at the base of the column. could be a pin or keyway sheared off, or possible a broken gear inside the steering box. you will need to start by turning the steering wheel and following shaft movement along the steering asembly until you locate where it stops turning.
