I use my M to farm 160 acres, mostly discing and planting. I am going to overhaul the engine this winter.

I noticed that there are valve stem oil seals available for this tractor. Is it ok to put these on when I re-do the engine? Will they cause valve wear?

when it comes to engine building, i think there are a number of different schools of thought on putting the motor together. i just had my head done for my super m with the tisco kit from this site. new valves, guides, springs, machined in hardened seats. the engine guy did not use the guides that came with the kit. he was concerned with pressing the old guides out as they pass thru the cooling jacket, and did not want to damage the bores by pushing rust thru. sooo, he bored the guides and put inserts in them. he didnt put seals in. other guys will knurl the guides instead of replacing them, thought on that is the grooves in the knurlings will hold oil to better lube the valves. talk to your machine shop guy and see what he recommends.

I believe in knurling also. By the time you lose a quart of oil through the guides, it is time for an oil change anyway. If you seal them off and run them dry, they will wear out faster.

valve guides are about two dollars each. unless your guides are worn out there is no need for stem seals. i have never used them on any of the rebuilds that i have done.

I did not use valve stem seals when I rebuilt my H... I get a small puff of smoke on start up and no oil consumption. For some odd reason my tractor ran for the first 60 years without them, I don't think they are the least bit necessary.

Of course, that's just my experience and opinion...
