My 39 M has a dipstick for the engine oil and
the tractor serial # and block serial # match.
#5920. Can anyone explain that, because I thought
they all had petcocks in the oilpan.

The top petcock is the full mark. The bottom one is a quart low. When you run distill you always had to drain a quart out at night and refill with a new fresh quart of oil. Distill did not burn clean. My dad told me this. The old H did not have much power neither running on distill.

Some (maybe all) U6 power units had a dipstick.
My 1940 M has a replacement block and it has a place for a dipstick like the U6. Hole is filled with a Welch plug.

H and M had no dipstick standard from the factory. 2 petcocks on right side of engine. Open top and add oil till oil flows from top petcock than close top petcock. Very crude way of checking oil and can be messy also. Years ago I thik TSC.stores sold a dipstick that replaced the top petcock but had to remove oil pan to install it. BIG IMPROVEMENT! Also their is a flat spot at the top of the frame rail on right side of engine where I have seen a dipstick added. I have not done this yet but thinking about it. Maby somebody that has done this will explane this and post a picture. This dipstick would be where it is on 400/450 tractors. I added one of the petcock dipsticks on an M in the 1960,s. Armand

Maybe that is just a matter of preferance, but I don't see a thing wrong with the petcock design. I have never lost one or had one stolen. Works quite well.

So, what is the dipstick on my M (not the one that sits on the seat)for? My owners manual isn"t clear but it would appear to be for hydraulic fluid?

If it is under the gas tank it is for hydraulic fluid.

There is none. The oil is check by opening two petcocks on the side of oil pan. The upper is full and lower a quart low.

Unless I'm mistaken the M uses the same setup as the smaller Farmall's of that era and does not have a dipstick. You should find a pair of small valves on the side of the oil pan. One will be slightly higher than the other. If it runs out of the bottom one and not the top one you should be good to go. tractorsam
