Got this B yesterday but it will not turn the engine over well unless I put my big battery charger on it on jump mode. Then if I do that the engine spins over just fine. Oh the battery is brand new as in less then 24 hours old, maybe a bad new battery?? Oh well guess I'll pull the starter off and have it checked to be sure. Plus the bendex seems to have problems since it likes to grind about 75% of the time when you hit the starter button

Sounds like battery to me. I have replaced about five times as many batts as starters. Less since I quit buying DieHards. Please post.

also check the bushings on either end of the starter case. if the are worn, the starter will pull hard to try and center the armature. see if you got any side to side wiggle at the bushings. napa can get the bushings. the one in the nose is easy to drive out, the one on the rear cover is a little harder, but if you have a pilot bearing puller its pretty easy to get out.

I agree with JT, in that it sounds like it just needs a good clean up and maybe brushes. I just fixed a starter that had given me fits for many years. The main fix was cleaning up the mating surfaces between the end plates and where the starter mates to the tractor. Most overlook this, and to be honest I never paid any attention as well until someone mentioned it. I simply took some emery cloth, and a small wire brush to those surfaces until they were clean and bright, and now it spins easily even when the temp is cold. Before it turned hard even when in the summer. JT is right, they are pretty simple to work on. When you think about it those mating surfaces on the starter are the rest of the ground circuit and all the 00 cable in the world will not help if those are rusty. I was going to change out my cables to 0 or 00 cable, but after doing some clean up it spins over fine with 6 ga. automotive cables.

Rich, Sooooo o have you got a B and a D PLUS that chevy pick up alllll lll recently?????

Id have the store load test that "New" batery or at least give it another good long slowwwww w charge. The cables (0 or 00) n grounds are all good n they dont get hot do they????? (but you already know all that stuff) Is the ground attached to a thin wimpy rusty something??

If the lights dim way down bad when you crank it Id suspect a starter problem (dragging or commutator or armature or bushings) but if not it could be EITHER a switch problem yet still the starter (brushes n springs maybe). You already know all that stuff also

No lights o I can't go by them. 12 volt system and the ground is now hooked to the starter bolts and good and clean. + cable is an auto type but it doesn't get warm as the other one doesn't also. I figure it has to be the start since the bendex has all sorts of problems also. Payed to much for this B but it helped a friend who is tring to sell his place

Yes a good cleaning never hurts then you can check the brushes also. Probaply the ends of the armature havent seen any cleanlube in yrs as those bronze bushings sure can get gummy.

Rich,
don't waste your cash on a starter rebuild shop. Take it off, take a fine emory cloth, put in a vise, clean the brass commutator like you would a shaft with the emory cloth, then take a broken hack saw blade and clean the grooves on the commutator, when you get it apart, you ill see what I mean. They are very, very simple to work on. Also check the springs on the brushes to make sure they are not weak. If you are not 100% sure on brushes and springs, go to starter shop, get a bunch of Delco Remy starter brushes and springs and keep 'em around, then put back together and put a little grease in the bushings at each end of the shaft. I know you have the ability to do this simple job. If you were not 5 hours away, I would show you how to do it.
Jim

I did that on my Oliver Super 88 this summer and what a pain it was getting the brushes back in place. I couldn't figure out how to keep them up so I could slide the armature back in. If it was easy to do that I would but so far I don't know a way to do it. I'd rebuild it my self if it wasn't for that. I do know it needs a new bendex either way

On the ones I rebuild, normally when I put the rotor back in, there is enough play on the brush and brush holders that I take a screwdriver and pull them back one at a time, and keep pressure on the rotor and it normally goes together real easy. You should have a band to come off the starter housing, and as Gordo said, you can also tie each brush back to the starter housing with dental floss, that also works real slick. Good luck.
