got this little 240 about field ready, having some issues with the fast hitch. on the down cycle, it lowers real good and makes a bold statement, i have the back blade mounted on it. when raising the hitch, some time it will not go up, i can hear the engine labor on the pump. if you lower the hitch and then raise it, it will come up. seems to raise a lot slower than it drops. i checked the linkage going to the spool valve, it has good travel in both directions. i also changed the hydraulic fluid and cleaned the filter screen. old fluid was fine, no dirt or goop. looks like there are some adjustments according to the manual for the hydraulics. was thinking on flipping the hydraulic hoses going to the hitch and see if it reverses the problem. any ideas?? in the down position, it will lift the rear of the tractor, so its got good pressure, and the blade will stay hanging if the hitch is up, doesnt creep down.

Glenn, like Jim says there was what some call a highway mower valve on lots of these old tracors. My SC has it. It does slow speed way down in one direction, and yours could be backwards. Should be slower to drop than lift. I think you may have an adjustment problem with the not wanting to do anything at times. I had this same trouble with my 240, but don't remember what we done to fix it.

from what i read in the owners manual, the hydraulics can be adjusted for one way or two way. also under the seat, there is a cast iron ?? box about 1/2 the size of a cigar box and half as thick. the lines come from the valve under the steering column in steel lines and then connect to this box. coming out from under the seat heading back to the cylinder they are rubber coated hydraulic lines. maybe flip the two lines at this block? there are no linkages at this block, nor is there any other knobs, levers, or adjustment screws that i can see, just looks line 2 lines in, two lines out.

Glenn, I am thinking there was something about the control handle. I think mine would whine at certain positions until wiggled a little. Been so long I just can't remember what the deal on it was. Sold the little unit in 94 or 95 in favor of another SC. I use the SC to cultivate tobacco, and fit my needs a lot better. I have often wished I had kept it, but can't have everything I guess. I had trouble on my 350 with a safety check valve. It would always lift but, It would only let down sometimes and then quit all together. Don't know exactly what was wrong with it as I had an extra, and just swapped them out.

what type of hydraulic valves are on that model? are they like the 400/450 where you can change from double to single acting by turning a valve with a wrench?

brainstorming

The problem may be the hose connection. There is a limiting valve in the system that prevents radical dropping. I know it is on 350s, not sure where it is designed into yours. If it is backwards, it would act like that. Normal valve action is backward and down for down, and forward and up for lift. Even if this is correct, the valve may be at the cylinder and be backwards. Also make sure there is no dirt in the lever slot that might limit the lever travel, it must go all the way to the lift position. Good luck, I hope this helps. JimN

if you move the control lever foreward, the hitch drops, if you pull back, it raises the hitch, that is correct? i have full travel both ways at the valve by the steering column, the linkage isnt binding any where.

That is backwards. It is likely that they are just wrong on the cylinder. Be sure to change the fitting on the cylinder, the restrictor could be in there. JimN

It goes up slower for two reasons:

- It is against gravity. The weight of the hitch helps push it down faster.

- Extending the cylinder takes more fluid.

Can't help ya with it not wanting to go up, unfortunately. Maybe check the linkages for excessive wear?
