Having recently purchased this 300, I was replacing the nonworking oil pressure gauge and discovered that the very loose belt on the generator could be the reason that it does not charge the battery. having just discovered the GEN I was amazed that there was no adjustment 4 the belt tension. Is that the way of things farmall? OR has there been a Cobbler in the works? Is there a secret to loosening the bigger belt on the fan or is it one of those "HAVE FUN" deals? 30 CC

The big belt also runs on a split sheave on the water pump. It should have a square head lock screw on the front half, which is adjustable. It may not have been adjusted recently so you may have to loosen things up with penetrant.

There are square lugs on the front half to aid in adjusting with a punch however it is cast iron so don't overdo it. A brass punch will help you to not hit it too hard.

You may not need to adjust it if you still have the adjustable sheave on the generator.

Neither belt has to be tight, just tight enough to spin the appropriate parts. Overtightening will wear out the bearings quicker.

the original and correct generator/pulley, adjusts the tension by tightening the pulley sheaves. one half is held in place by a lock bolt and the other is mounted solid to the generator shaft. by adjusting the pulley sheaves closer together, the belt will tighten and have the correct tension. ingenius design

I’m not sure “ingenious” is the word I’d use.

A former owner of my 300 Utility twisted off the set screw (below the surface of the casting) on the water pump pulley. After an EZ-Out snapped off, I had to carefully cut out off a piece of the casting to remove the remains of the EZ-Out and the screw. Fortunately, it looks like I salvaged enough threads to install a new screw. Then it took a week-long soak and a couple of hours of careful tapping/whacking to loosen the pulley in order to remove it and clean the dirt and rust off the threads.

If that’s supposed to be a practical design for a machine that works outdoors, I must be missing something. It seems to me an adjustable or spring-loaded idler pulley would have been the way to go.

I agree. I never understood why they put the "big" belt in front of the small belt. I also never understood why they put a belt that could transmit 20 horsepower on the 5 hp fan hub/gen drive. Once they are clean and have silver anti-seize on them they are operational. JimN

Anti-seize? Dang! That's exactly what I did! It's nice to know I may be on the right track for once. :-)
