Andy, Yes you can convert from a 2 wire (BAT GEN) Cutout Relay to a full fledged 3 terminal (Bat Arm Fld) VR WITH SOME WIRING CHANGES AS FOLLOWS:

BAT on VR wires to ammeter same as BAT on relay wired to ammeter. Just use the same wire but now to BAT on the VR

ARM/GEN on VR wires to gennys ARM post same as ARM/GEN on the relay did.

REMOVE the wire from the gennys FLD post that used to wire to the LHBD switch (its no longer used) and instead wire the gennys FLD post to FLD on the VR. The switch can still control lights it just no longer connects to the genny

If its a 3 brush genny I wouuld adjust it (3rd brush) to the high charge setting.

You could use a 4 terminal VR if you want in which case loads like lights are fed from L on the VR instead of from the ammeteres load terminal as on the 3 terminal VR system

when you order certain part numbers from Standard Ignition brand, you get some type of wound resistor (about as big as a pen cap) to use when converting from a cutout to a regulator. but no instructions. what gives?

That goes to the field terminal and replaces the wire going to the sw for hi-charge.

Sure. I did. It works fine. I even kept the 4 position switch. I use the L setting when I am running more or less full throttle for several hours at a time.

Do I need to change any wiring or will it bolt right on and wire the same as my cut out?

Andy, refer to BobMs wiring diagrams, I think there are some differences in the wiring, but nothing you can't cope with.
