I've got a 53' Super c that smokes (but, runs great). After the holidays, I'm going to pull it in the garage & pull the head...if needed, I'm going to send it out for a valve job. What do I need to do (or not do), to avoid problems? Other than new gaskets what should I order now? Last time I had a valve job done on another tractor, I believe it cost me about $300, this sound right? Just trying to "plan ahead". Thanks

You probably need to rebuild the engine with new sleeves and pistons. Have the crankshaft checked for wear and install new bearings. Have the head reworked too. Hal

"Smoke" could be oil control rings, as well as valve stem/guide wear.

WHY are you assuming "valves" are the problem?

One sign of worn valve stems/guides is a "shot" of excess blue "oil smoke" right at startup, from oil that has sneaked down past the valvestems after shutdown.

Machine shop costs ARE way up, but, you should be able to get a LOT of parts, as well as grinding the valves, for $300.00.

Of course, that will depend upon if the guides, as well as any seats need to be replaced, and if the head needs to be "surfaced".

The gaskets ain't cheap, either, I'm not sure if you are figuring that into the $300.00?

You should take a compression check first. What will be the use of the tractor? A little smoke realy aint serious unless we are goint to farm 60A. If you want to do a complete job sleeves and pistons will run 280 grind crank and bearings 225 head can run 300 gaskets 55 all things to consider. Then you will need a new battery and possible starter work.
