I am about to start work on a friend's 350. The TA is not working. What is or are the weak parts of the TA? Is a clutch replacement usually all that is needed or do you have to do a complete rebuild?

On our own we have machined the low side and use a 1066 spraq instead of the ramp and rollers.

As SDE said the ramp and rollers usually is what goes bad. The bottom end of the carrier will need turned also if the rollers flattened out. I would reccomend replacing the t/a clutch and flywheel if they show any wear at all also. I have all parts to build your own t/a or complete t/a available. If SDE wouldn"t mind you can probably ask him about my parts. Email me if you may be interested.

I took two apart last fall. On both tractors I replaced the pins, springs and put in the oversized rollers. It is amazing how bad a couple of the rollers were worn. The T/A clutch disc and pressure plate looked good on them both.
Gaskets were about $75 and the rebuild kit with a rebuilt ramp will be about $125.

Good Luck
SDE

Are no weak parts if operated properly. Most the time the rollers and ramp in the unit itself is shot. No way to know until you tear it down. If it makes a whining sound and acts like it want's to pull or does pull in lower gears but not high ones, it is likely the roller and ramp. The TA does have to be adjusted exactly according to the book. You may try that first. If you remove it from tractor a complete rebuild will likely be the way to go, as it is a big job to split the tractor in 2 places. The ramp and rollers can be done by only splitting at the rear end, but it requires some barnyard ingenuity to put it back together. I am sure more detailed and better info will come in a bit.
