Questions and Opinions on D264 OH

How bad is it to change only rings and sleeves? The tractor starts good, runs good and has excellent oil pressure even on idle but smokes a little (more under load than not) and has excessive blowby. A small oil puddle develops under blowby tube when the tractor sits after running for some time. I've always done a total overhaul on the tractors I've worked on in the past, but those were gas M's and H's, and the motors were SHOT! A major OH kit for an M or H is cheap compared to a diesel. I don't have a good shop in the winter (small garage and the truck has to sit out in the ice if tractor is inside) so I'm thinking this would fix the problem and be a fairly easy and quick job. This tractor is not an everyday worker but merely a hobby. Will I regret it in the future? or why replace whats not broken?

Hello BOBM45: It sounds like a fairly good running MD and I have a lot of time on MD's. I'd be tempted to leave well enough alone if it's just a hobby tractor. The first item I would like to question is the Small puddle of "oil" you say appears under the breather tube. I've seen that on various engines and one time I took a real close look. It turned out to be mostly water with just enough diesel fuel in it to make it seem like all oil. How about checking that on a hot Summer day rather then early Winter such as now? I don't like a lot of blowby either but life ain't perfect when looking at old machines. A diesel needs good pistons and rings to get good compression in order to run good. Yours runs good. Maybe it's excess water vapor from the way you store giving it lots of crankcase condensation. Maybe some rain water running into crankcase? How about blowby after a full day of heavy work? Just thought I'd question the reason for the blowby. Good luck which ever way you go...

Injection pump and injectors have all been gone through and in good shape. I'm trying to avoid pistons, sleeves, rings, pins and bushings as this kit cost 1100 bucks. No oil in coolant. Radiator always stayed full and when I drained it after several years use, it looked good. I guess I just figured bad valves or seats wouldn't affect much, but I suppose it could.

I think you'll regret pouring a whole pile of money into something that doesn't get used everyday. I know I have. Here's what I would do on that engine- pull head, send to machine shop and have valve guides checked and valves/seats ground. Don't bother checking it for cracks, as all of those gas start diesels have cracks in the head, if you're not having any coolant leakage/compression in radiator, don't worry about them. I would then pull the pistons and sleeves. Get a good micrometer and measure the rod journals. If not in spec, then you gotta start thinking out-of-frame overhaul. If they're good, I would put in new sleeves, pistons, rings, rod pins and bushings, and rod bearings. I don't think I'd even bother looking at the mains, because you say you've got good oil pressure and I've heard mains for that engine are almost impossible to find and priced out of this world. Not sure what injector/injector pump work costs for those old gas-starts, but thats about the only other thing I'd look into.
