TA trouble

I have a 78 model 686. I used a IT manual which shows 1/16" free travel on the TA clutch lever and the hand lever. I set this adjustment. The manual only shows this adjustment. Is there any other adjustments needed? When I engage the TA I can feel and see the the tractor RPM go lower but the TA doesn't seem to engage. There is no slipping or anything just no decrease in tractor speed. It is like it is still in Direct. Took the inspection plate off and everything that I can see looks ok. When moving the TA lever I don't see the pressure plate move off the TA clutch plate. Any suggestions? Thanks

Did you just replace the t/a clutch or something? Or is this just an upcoming problem that started. If it was just replaced did you put the t/a disc in backwards?

that measurement is best observed during an engine and TA clutch adjustment procedure, making sure to follow each step from the beginning. everything needs to be just right.
if it was working before you adjusted it, then you missed something. if it isn't working to begin with, it may need more than just some adjusting. tell us more about your situation.

you should be reading out of the same IT manual as the 656, which i own. the illustrations and text definitely indicate more than just a 1/16th measurement at one point. they are quite thorough, i thought. others may chime in before i get to it, but i can browse my manual and give you paragraph and illustration numbers to reference.

Better stop driving that tractor until you get the TA adjusted right. RPMs should not go LOWER! RPMs should stay the same if you're not pulling anything, or go HIGHER if you are pulling a load.

Something is binding. I would guess that it's both in TA and Direct at the same time, but the clutch is slipping enough that you haven't broken the TA, yet.

There is a very strict set of adjustments you have to go through on both the TA and clutch linkages at the same time. Screw either one up just a little, and you're asking for trouble. Tractor Vet can do it in his sleep, and rattles off the process like an auctioneer. Hopefully he'll be along soon.

reminder: this is a mechanical, like the 300/400 etc., TA, so the procedure is not identical to the 706+ that TV knows by heart. i recall him saying he needs to refer to the book on those mechanicals. either way, it is a very strict procedure that needs to be carefully followed.
