D282 Applications Engine Details

Hey Guys,

I need to know a little more about the D282 engine than I'm finding at YT, online or in my library on tractors.

1) When did the engine first come out? I understand it predated the 560 by at least a coupla years. I also have read it was used in some IHC trucks??

2) When did it end? Was the '66 706 the last place it was used?

3) I've been told that the dealer installed turbo kit (late 560) bumped them up to about 80HP and M&W a bit more (using the "official" settings). True?

4) Has any one seen fywheel hp and torque output specs for these engines? I can find PTO and drawbar power, but not flywheel.

Yes they used the 282 turbo and none in IH trucks usually in the small cab overs.Like they said the TD9-92 series used it with the factory turbo which farmers bought this kit and put them on their 560.I have one of these and it will make 90HP on the dyno.72 was about the last year for this motor.

They were based off of the six-cylinder gas engines like the C-263. The block and crankshaft look identical, although there are differences that make them non-interchangable. I would guess the 282 came along mid 1950's in construction equipment, 560 and 660 had it in 1958. The 656 still had it in 1973. 715 combine had it's big brother, the D-301 until late in it's production run into the late '70's, was replaced by 310 German in the real late ones. As diesels go, they aren't the greatest engine in the world. They've only got 4 main bearings like a gasser, and only 14 head bolts. The fit of the dry sleeves is critical, and many of them sucked sleeves down into the oil pan. They do give quite good fuel economy. Don't beleive the hard-starting myths about them that were started by those who don't have the patience to hold the glow plug button for the required minimum of 30 seconds on a 90 degree day.

In the I.H. 660 utilty/wheatland it was puting out an additional 400/500 RPM's and had a slightly bigger radiator than the 560. Also used in 715 combine and maby 403? Also DTT(i think)282 without a turbo was used in 3600 tractor-loader-backhoe. Armand

Jim: D-282 had a lot of applications as a stationary engine. Lot of ice plants in skating rinks were powered by DT-282 and they were turning over 100 hp. The TD9 was close to 80hp, as were the 660 and 706. Of course the longest running tractor application was 560 followed by 656 at around 63hp.

It was possible to get 90 hp out of them without turbo. My 560 put in 10,500 of it's 11,000 hours at 90 hp and no turbo. The 560, 656 and 706 had Rossa Master pumps, don't know about 660 but expect it was the same. The ice plants I saw used an inline pump same as TD9.

Clefus: I really can't say, I never did know the brand of pump. A contractor that did bulldozing for me had a 282 in his TD9. We parked the 560 along side one evening, mainly to compare the engines. He had a turbo and this inline injection pump on the TD9. I've noticed the same pump on other crawlers.

On the ice plants and how I know about them. a couple stopped at our place one day, she was a school friend of my wife. He was in the area to service an ice maker at a nearby arena. I went with him on his service call and spotted the 282. He told me a very high percentage of ice plants in the area used the 282 diesel. Very efficient and they crank over 100 hp. He was actually unaware IH had ever used this engine in a tractor. Upon ariving back at farm, I took him to see 656 and 560, again the turbo and inline injection pump in this ice maker engine was the visual difference from my tractor engines.

Don't know years, but the last TD9 had d282 the 656 would have used it later than 706 and some combines. I don't know if any trucks had the d282, but that basic engine 263 282 was a truck engine.
