What to do with 39 H Fix or Part??

Here is the dilema. Have H Farmall serial #109xx. Has Nov/Dec I(1939) codes with recessed/ notched platform, distillate carb, both tanks and all the fuel lines. Six volt and does run ok. Has a working M&W hand clutch and good brakes. The bad news is that the sheetmetal is junk form a tree falling on the gas tank and bent up grill and hood. The front tires are ok and has good 13.6-38 on back but the rims are fair at best. The rear engine and front trans seals are leaking badly and it needs a carb kit. Probably needs the head worked over and maybe new rings though it does show good oil pressure. It does smoke a little but I have not had a chance to work it hard. Is there enough value here to spend some major dollars on getting this thing suitable for public showing and use or will I spend more on it than I could ever recover? And thus should I just part it out. I realize a H is not anything special and I have 2 others. Just really don't know what to do with this thing? Thanks in advance

I disagree that H's aren't special. Mine is special to me and the guy who gave it to me, and to my boys. Well, right now it's just "That tractor that sits in the garage", but someday it will be that special tractor that they had so much fun on.

It's your call, but it's special to someone. I wouldn't part out a good running tractor. You won't get out financially what you put into it. But if you are farming for a profit, is a 68 year old tractor what you want to be using?

DO NOT PART IT OUT.

NEVER PART OUT A TRACTOR THAT RUNS, EVEN IF IT DOES NOT RUN PERFECT.

FIX IT UP, DON'T PART IT.

If you don't want it, its worth a try to sell whole before parting. If you want to fix 100 % original the sheet metal may be hard to find because the early was a little different than most.

Fix it up. I learn more about this hobby more every day. Correct factory offical tractors are hard to come by, and, in my mind, are impressive when fixed up. If it has all "I" castings, I would fix it. That's impressive. Start taking a close look at shows. Quite a few tractors have had major components replaced. Mainly engine heads and blocks. They still make nice restorations, and I commend those who did the work, but one with #'s that match is good to see. Best part is, sheet metal doesn't have date codes! Go back a few discussions, I believe MikeCA has a nice H distillate hood for sale.

Id fix it up!!!!! ! The little differences are interesting,, more of a historical value, Not many 39's in this area,, there are few, but not as many as I once knew about. I have some sheet metal off a couple of H's that are in good shape still.
I have your number still, Ill give ya call today. things are busy this time of year, but I havent forgot about ya. ChadS

Given that it is a '39 with the correct parts that make that year unique, I would fix it... or at worst leave it as is for "someday."

In the end, it's your call.

It's not about money. They will always part out for more than they are worth, and you will always put more in one than it is worth.

You jsut have to decide if you want to preserve a little bit of history or make a little bit of money.

The economics are the way they are because there are so many people wanting to preserve a little history so there is competetion for parts. My first parts tractor got fixed up because when it came down to it, I couldn't bear to destroy one by taking parts off of it. Your attitude may be different and that is perfectly legal and moral (in some circles, at least).

I have several tractors and they are just sitting in the shed. I sometimes wonder why I don't sell them. I redid them, but I don't use them and they always need attention. Whether or not to restore the 39 H is of course your call.
Unless you really want one I would just sell it.

Since these tractors are so common, you should be able to find decent sheet metal. If it were my tractor,I'd do it up for no other reason than because its an early build tractor.

I had a 1941 A. Thought the money that needed to go into it was too much. I sold it and have regretted it every day. If I still had it I would still put it on the back burner. That A is still in my blood, is you H?

If it was mine, I would fix and keep it. If you were to fix everything, you will have more $$ in than you will ever be able to sell it for. If you want to sell it, sell it as is and let the next owner fix the sheet metal and oil leaks. My personal opinion is not to part out a good running '39 H. 1939 was the first year they were made and there were only 10152 made that year and the ones that are left are getting fewer.

Thanks for the replies guys. And I welcome more if there is some. I truly value the opinions of fellow tractor people who have made similar choices. After thinking this through most of the night (literally) My gut tells me this morning that I have enough to work with to keep working on this old relic and try to improve her attitude (and mine). Plus I've already had some gracious offers of some parts to make that happen. Surely with 50 hours and 1000 bucks I could revive it to some status in the shed among the others. I also have a 1940 H that is completely redone so maybe I will sell the 47 instead. Thanks, you folks are the best counsel out there and don't charge near as much as the lawyers! Migraine

Migraine, this is the componet tractor. 65-70 hp with a stock engine,, this one was about 115hp with a bone stock short block. could get as light as 3200 with driver,,, had power steering! The front radiator support off the upper pedistal is where to base the 460 sheetmetal off of,, and then build a steering post. was a 1940 H, and the engine was in a 403 IH combine. 2nd gear was very powerful, could not stop it in 2nd gear. in this picture its at 5000#, the rear wheels are off a big oliver, with no suitcase weights it weighed 4450,,, with coop rims and 15.5s, 3200 and still all cast iron chassis. Enjoy! ChadS ChadS3@hotmail.com
