I took advice from a previous post and spent the weekend working on my C.

Before changing over from 30w non-detergent engine oil I took off the valve cover and oil pan to check for sludge build up.

Here's what the top end looked like...

comments?

I always do my best to get the ground cable bolted directly to the starter mount. The starter draws the most amps, and a direct shot should be the best.

Just writing to add to others' comments that your engine is clean and I wouldn't worry about it.

Also, water in the rearend is normal for these old tractors. Condensation and also water can get in around the bolts in the top cover when they sit out in the rain.

Many people leave them parked for an extended period and the water separates to the bottom, drain it off and put the plug back when oil comes out - top it off and go again!

What part of the country are you in? If you are north of kansas, in the midweat, or pa/ny you are in the region where all the oil makers show 5-20 is right for the temps. Irf you don't expect to work the tractoe hard, over 60 degrees ambiant temp then go with the 5-20. Try a little test. Pour some 15-40 in a can, and some 5-20 in another. Set them outside for the night. Try stirring them in the morning. You will break your stick in the 15-40.

Have you actually done that? It mus thave been a real small stick.

15w (15w40 when cold) is pretty thin.
5w is pretty thin for a Farmall with big clearances. I thought the factory recommendation for very cold was 10w.

Your engine sure is clean.

I always change them to detergent without any extra effort and have never damaged one.

Those that don't know think detergent oil cleans an engine. That is not right, all the detergent does is to keep the partcles in suspension so they don't settle out. But you still get sludge with lots of detergent oils. Good hot clean oil of any type will help clean an engine. The notion that detergent oil will break loose lots of debris and plug up an engine is promoted by those who are speculating. You can usually spot responses here that are guesses, but the detergent oil thing is a little tougher.

Save your money and change the oil when it gets dirty.

Andy: I have never professed to being much of an engine man, however I'd like you explain something for me. Some years ago I was using detergent oil in my diesels and non dtergent in my gassers. Since employees where getting oil mixed up, I decided it had to be one oil for all. Of 4 gassers I had, one I knew was terribly dirty and the other 3 relatively clean. Running one's finger around the drain hole on oil pan no sludge could be felt. I changed the oil in all these gassers, ran them a half day and as I had been advised changed oil and filters again. I took the plug out of the dirty engine and nothing came out. I poked with my finger in the drain hole, and had to poke through an inch crust of sludge. I removed the pan and yes a solid inch of hard sludge full length of pan. I drained what I believed to be 3 clean engines removed the pans and yes, there was some sludge in all three. I'd like for you to explain to me exactly what loosened up all this sludge. All of a sudden the dirty engine was clean under the valve cover. All I know is what I saw happen. A lot of sludge came out of that dirty engine and some came out of the others. If you would be so kind, give me your opinion what happened.

Steve: Even though the engine looks clean, I'd still warm in up good, drain the oil in a clean container then recheck for sludge in bottom of pan. If you see no sludge, put your clean oil back in. If you find sludge go with a new filter and new clean oil. After detergent oil is the true test.

While I had the C in the heated garage I put new points, condensor, plugs and dist cap on it. Also changed out the puny battery cables to 2/0 welding cable.

Halfway through changing the plugs my wife and son came out and asked if I'd come in and play a game of cards. I said sure and went in the house.

An hour later I came back out and had forgotten that I had changed only 1 plug and had the second one completely out of the engine. Gettin old I guess. I decided to start the engine. It sounded terrible! I stood there scratching my head wondering what the heck I had screwed up.

I walked around the tractor and saw the spark plug wire dangling. DUH!!! Finished the plug job and all was fine.

I also decided this was a good time to change the tranny oil. I crawled the rear end and started taking the drain plug out. What's this!?? WATER?!!

Yikes - a small amount of water drained out and then came the very mily oil. The oil was the color of light caramel. Not good. Gald I decided to change it.

I have no idea how water got in there. The tractor is usually shedded. But I did leave it out in a heavey rain once last summer. Could that have done it?

I hope nothing is damaged.

We have several inches of snow Saturday while I was inside working on the tractor. Saturday night I drove it out of the garage and put it into my machine shed.

Sunday morning it was about 16 degrees F. I went out and slid open the big shed door. Got about halfway open the one of the overhead rollers decided to snap off its hanger. Had a new project. Just happened to have a new roller set and after an hour of cussing I had the door working again.

Went in to start he tractor and it barely would turn over! I was expecting much better results for my efforts to say the least.

What now? lighter oil? If it gets any colder there's no way this thing is going to start.

Very common to have water in the tranny. Pulled several gallons out of my H recently. Although you shed yours for the most part there is still the condensation issue inside the housing. Mine is usually outside and it gets in through the shifter and all the bolts on the top of the case.

If it still has that short ground cable hooked to the box under the steering post, it is not getting through all those old rusty connections. Get a longer cable to go from the battery to the starter mounting bolt. Are you holding the clutch down? If not, it will turn harder because the transmission oil is stiff.

Teddy - nope, I'm not holding the clutch in. Never occurred to me. Thanks for the tip.

I'll change out the positive battery cable as you suggest as well.

Thanks!
Steve

That is one claen engine, All is well. Condensation and external humidity cause the water in the gear oil. If tractors are used for a 8 hour day of hard work in the summer, they will stay water free from heat. if not they get it. The archives, and recient posts oar on the topic of removing water from oil. Search for box.

If still hard to crank, use 5-40 synthetic oil in it. No issue with any problems go for it. JimN

Jim - good to know that's a clean engine. No way for me to know since I had never seen one before. I'm going to try a new 2/0 battery cable from the battery post to a starter boltd as teddy suggested. If it still turns over hard I'll give the 5-40 a try.

Thanks,
Steve

Is that a build up of grindings or what? ( In the right side of the pan picture) Otherwise it looks good. If I would have seen the rockers, I wouldn't have pulled the pan.

I think the flash on my cmaera makes that look like a bunch of large metal chunks. It was not.

Teddy - it did to appear to be some fine metal in the sludge and what appears to be paint flakes.

here's the oil pan.

Didn't look too bad to me but I haven't much experience.

You can see the big dent. I pound it out before I put it back on the tractor.
