I seem to be having problems starting my IH 300. The engine is turning over but it does not fire. I just tried the plugs first since I thought they may have been fouled, but it made no difference. I pulled the distributer cap & cleaned it. Plug wire connection to the cap was corroded and I cleaned it, but id did not make a difference. I was pushing snow when the tractor stopped running and would not start back up. Any suggestions?

Got spark????? Pull the coil wire out of the distributor cap (leave coil end intact) and place its free bare metal terminal end to within 1/4 inch from tractor steel, turn her on n crank her over n see if shes sparking????? ?

So often non firing is cuz the points are bad, pull the cap n check the points gap and try to clean/buff/polish them if theyre not too bad or file slightly if burned n pitted n try her again.

If still no spark get a 12 volt test lamp or voltmeter n turn the ignition on and see if theres voltage on the coils lil input (NOT to distributor) terminal. If not check the ignition switch or temporarily hot wire the coil if the switch is bad n see if she fires then.

If it has an ignition ballast resistor between the switch but before the coil check to see if its bad/open??

If you need more post back n I will post my entire Troubleshooting Procedure for non sparking

I tried the plug trick and there was no spark. I then pulled the distributer cap off and tried starting the tractor again and the rotor does not move at all. The distributer should be geared to the engine so that when the engine is turning over the rotor should turn. Correct? To me this would suggest that the shaft of the distributer is broken or I have broken teeth on the gears. there is no grnding noise so I am thinking the distributer shaft. What are your thoughts?

You need to first check to see if you have spark and fuel. Check for spark at the coil wire and gas by pulling the drain plug. Then post back if your on sure how to go from there. You most likely lost one of those 2 things and it will not run with out both

My limited experience and knowledge give two possibilities. If it is converted to a 12v, check the resister as mine went bad over night one time. The other time it did it, the rotor was bad.
