I tried to hook up my log splitter to the hydraulics on my 44 M and made a huge mistake. Because of my total lack of thinking I had no return line on the splitter. I started the tractor and it ran for about 5 seconds and died. I have not been able to get it started since. It has been upgraded to live hydraulics and 12 volt battery ignition. It has spark, but I can not even get a pop out of it. I changed all the ignition components but still get nothing. I suspect I sheared a pin or key in the timing gears which has thrown the timing way off. Any one ever experienced this before. What is the fix? Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Matt

Thanks everyone for the very helpful advice. I tested the spark and the distributor timing and every thing seems to check out OK. I am starting to believe I may be having a fuel problem, but I have no idea what that problem is. Guess I will have to try some testing on the fuel system. Thanks again, Matt

Once you have No1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke take a look at the valves and see if both are closed. I think you may have stripped some teeth. Hal

If the gears messed up the cam may be off so that it could be hard to find compression on # 1. First turn engine until the TDC notch on front crank pulley lines up with pointer. Then see if the distributor rotor is pointing to # 1 spark plug wire or 180 degrees away. If so its probably still in time unless it happened to get exactly 180 off. A compression check will usualy tell if cam is off. You can pull the pump and inspect that gear and cam gear by turning engine. Try to shake the cam gear forward and back to check for hub breakage. If bad the other poster said what to do. A relief valve set no higher than 1000 PSI should be used in a stock M h live hydraulic system. With one 5 seconds shouldn't hurt anything unlees on the verge of breaking already.

The timing gear is to be suspected.

It's pretty easy to check, find TDC then see how far off the spark is, and whether the bug is pointing to No. 1. If it needs to be retimed, it probably needs to be torn down at this point.

In a hurry to get my MTA back together to get some hay baled I did almost the same thing last summer. I started it by not paying attention to how the hydraulic system was plugged but fortunately for me an old hydraulic hose blew and no other damage. Haste makes waste and I'm still amazed I made that mistake.

In your case, since it has been converted, if it has not had the timing gear upgrade this may just have been a matter of time before the gear went (if that's what happened).

If this is the problem, the front cover of the engine has to come off, major disassembly.
