So I brought my salvaged water temp gauge in to check it. I boiled some water and stuck the gauge in to read. But the way it was twisted the gauge was upside down as I read it, so I tried to gently bend it around. *POP* sssss ssss A small hole popped open in the line and water/steam squirted out.
Ruined, right? third party image

But...you don't have to do it all before you get it running. I assume you have the radiator all repaired and replaced and are ready to fire it up?
Just put the plug in and don't worry for now. I have never seen an H with a good stat, clean radiator and good pump overheat.
Put a new temp gauge on your Christmas list. All of us on this list have one thing on our list, that's a picture of you driving the H!

I just got the radiator off yesterday. I'm taking it to the shop this week for an estimate.
Yes, I'll be buying all new gauges eventually, but I was led to believe that it would be phenomenally stupid to not have a temp gauge on a tractor engine I know nothing about. So, I was going to make due with a temporary fill-in.
I wish I could fulfill that Christmas wish, but it's not going to happen before then. But progress is progress. At least it's not sitting idle.

Most likely ruined. You can almost never re use a temp gauge. Better to just buy a new one.

Andy.

The fluid in the gauge is not water, it is a compound designed to have an expansion rate that is consistent when in the range of from above freezing, to 250 degrees F. I think Keith has the answer if you want it. A replacement gauge was in your future anyway if I recall, just use a candy thermometer in the radiator neck in the mean time, The bulb will still block off the hole in the engine, just use some side cuts to snip the remaining capillary tube. Hey Mike, ya might want to read this article on repairing machanical temp gage. I found this last year doing a search for something else but related. Quite interesting, I think one of these days I'm going to give it a try. One has nothing to loose but time.HTH

I think those old temp gauges work kind of like old tractor electrics - once you let the smoke out it's kaput. Maybe someone has a fix. tractorsam
