When people say a M has the " High Speed Gear Option " are they talking about the 5th gear versus only 4 speeds on the standard M? My 48 MV has the X9 on the serial plate and a 5th gear and I was wondering if most MV's are set up this way or is this relatively rare? Thanks

I have original IHC brochures from the 40s. They list an "optional 7 mph fourth gear" as well as
a slow-speed first gear. These are on different sets of gears, so I don't THINK they had to be put in together as a single kit. Someone else here probably knows more about that than I do. Wouldn't take much to know more than I do.
The original 4th gear on these tractors was really too fast for heavy field work, and much too slow for the kind of road work farmers often did back in the 40s. I've hauled many a load of grain, hay or green corn a mile or so over a gravel road, pulling a steel-tired wagon. You didn't want to do too much over 5 or 6 mph, but to get this speed, you had to have the throttle wide-open in fourth--lots of unnecessary noise. In fifth, the H, especially, would not pull a heavy load at 5 mph in fifth (the IHC brochures give the useful speed in fifth as about 9 to 16 mph). There just wasn't enough torque. The 7 mph fourth gear would have been a great speed to have. You could throttle back a little and still get 5 mph. Even in the field, this would have been useful for some tasks, throttled back, of course (raking hay comes to mind, or pulling a peg tooth harrow if it wasn't too big).

I think X9 might have meant factory steel wheels, and all M's did have five gears. If it came with steels then it was locked out from the factory. Some tractors have an after market 2 speed lever.

X9 meant 7 mph 4th, there was no designation for steel or rubber.

Can't help you on how rare X9 is, probably rare considering a MV is not common to start with. Fourth gear is the only one shown in parts books as having a faster option. Have wondered why they call some suffix high speed gears and some 7 MPH attachment, don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that if fourth was 7 MPH in a M it would be slower in a MV with the same size tires. The drops have a smaller sprocket at top than at bottom and slow things down a little on a MV. Not to long after SM started the ring gear was changed from a 50 teeth to 47 on the V tractors to offset the speed reduction in drops.

All Ms had five gears. Fifth is always about 17 to 18 MPH wide open stock. The high speed gear was in 4th, and was just somewhat faster. If your tractor seems to only have 4, there may be a lockout bolt in place in the trans top (front left of shift tower on the flat part of the deck) this bolt stops the shifting into a gear that is actually in the trans. If I had an MV, I would be reluctant to drive it wide open in fifth, unless on clear straight and un congested road. But 12 to 14 would be fine with me. I hope this helps. JimN

Don't know about MV's, or the X9 suffix, as my chart shows no such suffix, but the high speed option is a higher 4th gear to run 7 MPH. It effects no other gears.

George X9 is listed as high speed gears in the M parts book that covers MV also. If you have a parts book the suffix chart is usualy in the back just before the list of part numbers. Thats the most accurate place to find what suffix's codes stand for. Early parts books may not have any or just part of codes though.

D Slater, I don't have the parts book, just a chart that I copied down from someone elses. It only covers X1, X2, X3, X4 and X20 on it. All I knew for sure was the high speed gears were only for 4th gear, and low speed gears were for 1st gear. Has all letters to show options.

No, I believe the high speed gears is still 5 gears, just faster, but maybe I'm wrong.
