A friend of mine has spotted a SMDTA in a neighbors barn. He says they were omly built one year (1954). Anyone out there know how many were produced?

A pretty beat up SMD-TA with a beat up/bent up loader on it that ran poorly went for $7500 at auction in ND this summer. I thought it was about $7000 over priced.

They are about twice the sale price of a SMTA gas. The low production has created a demand that will live on into the future. If it is reasonable, and available buy it. THey were very economical, and when set up correctly, pulled within 85 to 90% as much HP as the gas. JimN

Janicholson, I shouldn't be the way I am because that tractor was the pride and joy of my late brothers but beside the fact that he had to put a torque in it right after the used warranty ran out amounting to $1200 which my dad harped about constantly and I had to go over to his place after milking 75 cows and help him pull that thing around the place to start it in sub zero weather just to grind feed and haul manure on Saturdays the trip by the way was two miles on my gas M with no heat houser. Still those were the days. I have flashbacks every tractor show I go to. I still like them just for the sentimental value makes me remember by favorite bro.

A proper tuned SMD or T/A will pull with a bone stock original M gas tractor. A power improved M could be another story. If everything was in working order power to ignition was shut off by a switch in the front of intake manifold when lever was switched to diesel. Maintance and adjustments along with head problems and keeping gas in the starting tank was some of the pitfalls of those tractors, they needed more maintance than the gasers and a lot didn't get it. The way those tractors were used back then the tractor could have had a lot of hours by the time he purchased it. I had a SMD and a SM. The SM had a complete IH fire crator kit for 281 CI and was in good tune. Used the SM more than anyother IH tractor I owned. Later I picked up the SMD, never looked inside engine, but would like to know how it was set up because the SM couldn't pull with it. Yes I know thats not how most are.

One more BTW, if I had the space I'd own one in a heart beat just for sentimental value and it was an otherwise handy tractor for chopping corn and fuel economy.

D Slater I agree with everthing you say and more than likely that was the case the only thing was this tractor didn't have very many hours on it and the kicker was he bought it from a John Deere dealer and my brother was a green fan but I'm sure they gave him a lot of grief because dad pushed the red issue in other words buy red or else I'm not helping. You know what I mean?

I'm sorry mostly green but we had one in the early sixties and it was not an overwhelming powerhouse and I think it was because of all the live power crap plus power steering it struggled with 3X14's but was good on fuel but was not an issue with .20cent diesel fuel our 51M ate it up especially after I did an ovehaul in Voag and of course had to refuel the M twice a day whereas the SMTAD ran all day. The Bugger was hard to start in cold weather but could have been because you had to leave the power button pulled out to charge the battery which in turn probably burned up the points on the gas side otherwise a sweet tractor for its time. It was my brothers tractor and he's gone now but if he were here he'd say the same thing we called it the gutless wonder.

There were 2705 SMDTA's produced in 1954. They were produced for one year only. Source:IH Tractor Data Book; Guy Fay. Tom
