My farmall 140 will not start. I have had it started only once for about 10 minutes. I drove it out of the barn. Then when I shut if off, it has not started since. The lights stay bright, and when you pull on the saddle switch nothing happens. The starter does not make any noise. I have had the starter rebuilt. The battery terminals get hot while trying to start tractor. But the tractor does not even attempt to crank. There is no noise from the starter or the motor. Thank you for your help.

The Bus Driver may well be on to something. My SC has had this problem a time or two. It has been a grounding problem with cables each time.

Sometimes my 140 starter hangs up in the flywheel. I put the tractor in high gear and rock it back and forth, Most of the time it will break loose. You will know that happens when the fan moves.

While I do agree that the starter drive (Bendix) can get lodged in the flywheel, when it does and one tries to start the tractor, the amperage draw is tremendous and the lights would dim. I suspect a problem with or near the starter switch or that end of the battery cable. Will the engine turn with a hand crank? If so, the starter drive is not jammed. If the engine will not turn with the hand crank, the starter drive probably is jammed.

Sounds like the bendix is stuck in the flywheel. Take the starter off and see if the bendix is all the way out to the end of the starter shaft. If it isn't, bolt the starter back in and try it again. A lot of times when you loosen the starter, the bendix will go back in on it's own.
If that doesn't do it, you had better take the starter to a repair shop and have it checked out.

I would check those contacts on the starter, somtimes they wear out and or dirty as well. And make sure that your using nice clean connections on all the posts. One think to add to is the starter bound up?? this maybe your prob, just lossen the starter up and see if its locked up, they get stuck sometimes, and the bendix does not rotate back in. Give these a try. Good Luck

Your bendix is locked on the flywheel. just loosen up the bolts that hold the starter a bunch then wiggle the starter and you should hear it click when bendix releases. Tighten back up and try again. You mite have bad teeth on the flywheel or even a bad bendix it mite need to be cleaned and a little lite oil applied.
