H differentials - how to tell good from bad ?

When I'm looking at a new 65 year old differential laying on the counter at our local tractor junkyard, how do I tell if it is worth taking home ? My old was pretty beat and still worked fine.

How much play is typical between the spider and the case ? How much backlash is there usually between the spiders and bevel gears ? Anything that usually goes wrong with them ?

Thanks

Greg

THe backlash can be adjusted at anytime. The issue is tooth and bearing/bushing wear. If the teeth are looked at with a hand maginfying glass, and there3 is little pitting (spalling from lack of lube/rust water and humidity from no operation for long periods) no micro dents (brenelling is caused by hard broken buts of metal betweem parts)and the drive flank has little if any wear showing, the gears are probably servicable. If the bushings and thrust washers are clean scar free, and have only .001 to .003" clearance (AN APPROXIMATION) It is good to go. JimN
