Occasionaly, if you are not real careful on shifting, usually 3 to 2 OR 2 to 3, the lever will still move under your hand, but the transmission is locked in 2 gears. If you let out the clutch, the engine loads up and bogs down. Unboltng the transmission top, and re-installing it corrects the problem 'till next time.

What is out of whack ?? Shifitng Forks Spring & Ball worn ?? Other Possibiilty ?

We had the same problem with a 100. The front shift guide was to blame. Hard to tell unless you compare it to another one. One from a C or Super C will work as well as from a Super A -140.

We had this happen alot many years ago.
Turned out one of the shift guides had a crack in it.
That allowed the shift rail to jump.
With the shifter cover off.
Turn it upside down and carefully check the guides, especially the parts close to the cover.
Replaced it and never had another problem.

Steve: As gene said, the end of the shift lever is worn. You'll have to remove it separate from the transmission top, build it up so it snugly fills a notch on one shifting rail. It's best to build a bit oversize then grind enough to make it shift smoothly. Secret is get it so it can't get out of shifting rail notch until rail is at neutral.

There are also detent balls and springs on each rail, however those usually don't give much problem. If they are bad the symptom is poping out of gear usually under heavy load. Your best approach is remove the top cover, then remove lever from the top for rebuilding. After you remove the lever try moving those shift rails, you should be able to feel the detent balls activate. It's worth investigating while you have the top off.

You need to build up the end of the shift lever. You can drive the pin out of the shifter lever instead of taking off the tranny cover.
