I cant seem to find the correct seat for a 1940 H Farmall. Everything that I have seen has the mounting holes to close together for the pattern on our platform. This one has them farther apart almost like it is for a battery box, but this tractor is to old for that (i think).

It depends on what part of '40 your H is from. If it was an early '40, you will have a divet set in your Final Drive cover for the seat. If that is the case, you need the old style box seat. If you have the divet, let me know and I'll take a picture of the box seat frame I picked up for a friend so you know what it looks like.

If you don't have the divet, then you can use a regular curved tube seat.

Or the delux aftermarket seat

The deluxe aftermarket seat or "Monroe" seat has a large shock behind the spring. The one you have pictured, although not likely made by IH, became standard equipment on the later letter series, an option at first, and it essentially replaced the Monroe seat. My dad's 47 H came new with the Monroe seat. I do not know if it was installed by the dealer or at the factory.

I will try to post pics of my platform. I do not have the divet, but the seats pictured will not work either. I can get the front bolts in, but the back holes in the platform are to far back. It seems like the hole spacing in the platform is just to far apart for anything I have seen. I will try to post some pics and would appreciate seeing the box style seat. Thanks
