I had been having issues with the starter on my H (bendix would stick, starter not always turn over) so I finally broke down and bought a replacement. This one won't work at all. When you hit the starter button you can hear it barely spinning the starter, not even enough to throw the bendix out. Took it back and had it bench tested....checked ok. Tested the brand new battery....checked ok. Tested the starter directly to the new battery....ok. Thought maybe I had a questionable starter switch so I replaced it....still nothing. My tractor has the large battery cables which all the connections have been thoroughly cleaned. Only other issue I can think of would be a bad ground somewhere....any other thoughts?????

Gene may be on to it. My H had the connection at the starter switch look like brownish, but still clean copper showing, until I took it apart and saw the corrosion under the nut. It would also get hot there with very little cranking. I also had a 49 Chevy truck with 6 volt give me hot starting fits for 20 plus years! turned out the batt cable end was hollow where the wire went in. It was the original Pakard cable and looked in great shape until I pulled it off one time to charge the battery. The wire came right out of the end. New cable and it cranked like crazy. Check those connections closly especially the cable ends at the battery. On my H the pos cable hooks up to one of the starter bolts.

I agree with Gene Bender - sounds like a bad cable.

I had similar problems with my Super M last Sunday. Turned out that while the cables looked fine, corrosion hidden under the insulation on the ground cable had eaten away almost all the copper near the battery clamp end.

After installing a new ground cable the starter now spins like new.

For starters (no pun intended), hooking up a starter say in a vise etc for a bench test n just seeing/hearing her spin "okay" dont really tell ya all that much cuz theres no load. Of course, however, when in the tractor she ought to spin fast enough to engage the bendix.

Okay, if the starter is reallyyyyy yyyy good ???? and the starter switch is reallyyyyy yyy good????? ??and the battery is reallyyyyy yyyyy good???? and the cables are reallyyyyy yyy good????? A BAD STARTER TO FRAME GROUND IS ABOUT ALL THATS LEFT Clean n shine n wire brush the mating surfaces n starter mount bolts etc

OTHER ISSUES

If it has an external push switch versus a starter saddle mount you can by pass jump around the switch to insure thats still not the problem.

Even if cables look good to the eye externally, they can still be burned n carboned n resistive underneath or under the crimp, TRY JUMPERS OR DIFFERENT CABLES

If the battery grounded is to a thin or rusty wimpy sheet metal object, re ground to a clean main to frame bolt n try it.

Make sure the battery is reallyyyyy yy good n full charged????? ? Have it load tested

Remove, clean n wire brush, n re attach each n every battery n starter n switch n ground connection again

Wire brush the starter flange and the area it mounts to. Sounds like no ground.

if they both tst good then it has to be ground or bad connection to the starter..a ground i know will work but is only temporary is hook the cable to the bolts that secure the battery bod

You must have a bad cable somewhere they can sure fool ya as looks dont prove anything.Just hold sw down for a little bit and then feel the ends of the cables there must be someplace on the four conne3ctions thats the culprit. Whichever connection feels warm would be the place that the trouble cause if you have a good starter, good battery, and good sw. i has to be a bad cable. Whe you have had as many tractors over the yrs you soon learn its just a process of elimination. good luck

Are you using a 6 or 12 volt starter? How many volts is the battery you are using? I have a 6 volt starter on my H that I use a 12 volt battery with and it cranks over very well. How many volts is the new starter you got?

Where do you have the ground cable hooked. I have found that if you hook it to one of the bolts that hold the start on you get a better ground at the starter and less problems like you are having. Also one or both of you cables could be bad and that is something you can not see just by looking at them. They do go bad as they get old

Have you tried a 12 volt battery on it?
