There is a 656 hydro coming up at a sale this weekend. It was made in 1969.I have never been around a hydro. The guys at work say you should not use them for heavy work, such as plowing, but are nice for light work.Thinking might be nice to mow hay, pick up big bales, grind feed.Whats you guys opinion.Whats a good price to pay for it.Thanks for your replies

How do you do the stall test with a diesel hydro?

Thanks,

Joe

That's why you've got to do the stall test properly. A stall test done on a properly warmed tractor is still the only accurate way to judge a hydro.

Owned a 656 hydrostat for 20 plus years. Worked ground (disk and harrow) with it the same as any gear tractor and never had a problem. For many years hauled a two row potato harvest, again no problems. Keep the transmission filters changed and the hydraulic oil up to safe range and they will last a long time.

We also have a 544, gas, good brakes- hydro thats very handy, Its got a good loader on it and not too bad on fuel. Its got just under 3k hrs on it. The hydro works very well, and has had regular service. We do not work it very hard. I would like to trade down for something smaller but cant find anything good at a fair price-Its a very capable, stable loader tractor in my opinion.

records are nice, but stall test is far superior to records

Larry: I've been around hydraulics for a long time. Your stall test could be vastly different at start up, or 30 minutes going , or 5 hours of heavy work.

BH: They are over or close to 40 years old, I expect that transmission can cost $10,000. to rebuild. Having said that, unless they have some good records, turn you back on it.

Grandpa had a 656 gas standard shift and Uncle Mike had a 656 gas hydro. Both pulled 4 14s but the hydro was weaker in red clay than the standard with T/A. Both tractors were bought new in the late 60s and my cousin still has Grandpa's 656 - used daily on farm. The hydro lasted until the late 90s and both tractors had lived a hard life. In the early 70s we conventional tilled approx 700 acres with these two 656 tractors and one 706 with a minimum of three passes (plow, disk, disk). The hydro was great for hay baler, cultivating, bush-hog, planter, etc. Modern combines are hydro for independent ground speed control so unless you plan on plowing a lot of ground with it no worries!

do a stall test on it. if it passes it may be good. if it fails, proceed with caution.

656 hydro deisel is a good machine if it has been taken care of. I have a 544 deisel hydro and it has been a great tractor. I do agree dont do tillage with it. I have done some small plot plowing and discing, but was worried sick afterwards ruined the hydro. If it is in good shape I would be prepared to spend $7000+, thay are a nice size and a handy tractor.

We had a gas hydro. The thing ate gas and never ran right. The diesel hydro would be one of the handiest tractors to have. It sounds like the perfect tractor for what you want to do. They are also great as loader tractors. In my area probably 5k-7k for a GOOD/EXCELLENT CONDITION tractor.
