Just finished rebuilding my H engine. New crank, new rings, obviously all new gaskets, new paint, broken finger nails, all over filthy. refit flywheel (with cracks)fit new clutch plate, fit the pressure plate, centralise by eye. Lift on hand hoist and slide into place. Straight in lined up, bolted up, top two bolts and one on each side. Clutch pedal flops forward, say Oh! dearie dearie me. Fortunately at this stage check clutch movement, virtually none. Say Oh! bother. Resplit tractor. Check adjustment of pressure plate, actuating fingers out by about 3/8 inch so re-set them. Refit clutch spring, pedal goes back as it should. Line up and refit engine, goes in easy. bolt up same as before. clutch appears ok. Like my old teacher said "must pay more attention" Well it was something to do on a Tuesday. MTF

If you put in a rebuilt pressure plate those fingers should have been set and sealed by the rebuilder. There is a spec to set them at. You set clutch pedal travel with the clevis on the rod between pedal and clutch arm.

Hi I know that its not necessary to split to do the clutch. But I actually split to rebuild the engine. When it came to splitting it the second time it was easier than dropping the Hydrualic unit to get at the clutch as at that stage I only had four bolts in.MTF

You do not have to split an H to redo a clutch, it can all be done from under neath, I was sceptical but an old IH mechanic told me it was the only way to go..... .

I've replaced the clutch from underneath - not a problem, but after I dropped the hydraulic pump I didn't want to go though the pain of rebolting it up....
