My B transmission makes a whinning noise just in the Winter. It is not a cluncking, just a low pitched whine. I have new 90w- 140 in it, it is at the right level. 1. Will it hurt the trans? 2. Should I use a synthetic? 3. Use a magnetic heater on the trans? 4. Is it normal? Might have to plough tonight!!! YEA!!! Thanks, Steve

Well, I bought a B with a belly mower a few years ago. I dont use the mower. I mounted a 42 inch snow blade at an angle right in front of the driver, onto the mower front that is angled. One hole on the left of the blade mounts flush to the front of the mower. The mower has too much on an angle farther down, so the other hole on the blade has about a 10 inch bolt, which I then cut about 6 inches of 3 dia PVC to get the right angle on the blade. The bolt goes from the blade, through the PVC, then is mounted to mower. I can see clearly what I plough. I had the arm killer hoist last year, so rigged a electric winch with a pulley this year. The system works, and hasnt bent the mower at all.I plough my driveway, and an old WW2 Navy vet who has a bad shoulder. I will send a pic if I can.Steve

If the gear lube your using has a "W" in it's designation, then it is made for winter use and should be fine.

If you are truly concerned, you could fill it with 75W for the winter and go back to 85w-140 or straight 90 for summer time.

I, too, would love to see pictures of your set-up. If you are unable to post pictures you could email them to me at smgussey at yahoo.com and I'll host them for you.

You have a snow blade on your B? I have only seen that done one time and was not real excited about the arrangement. It was a front blade with long extensions to the rear were it hinged somehow...can't remember exactly how...and a pto driven pump ran the hydraulics. I would be interested in how you are set up. Plowing snow with the B would be a hoot if you could do it without damage to the tractor.

dave i built a plow for my b. not sure what the blade was off of but it swivels and locks with a pin . uses 2x4 rectangular tubing, ran from drawbar and built brackets to attach to the front bolster. have a cylinder up front to raise and lower plow, pto driven pump. tires are loaded and have a set of chains off a road grader, it pushes snow real good, aint the warmest to run in a howling wind.

Your B uses straight cut gears, which will normally be noisy. It also uses fairly high viscosity gear oil which doesn't flow all that well at low temps. Switching to 80W-140 might help a bit.

the 90-140 is prolly a little thick in the winter. what you can do is pour a quart of marvel mystery oil in the gearcase, it will thin the gear oil just a tad, you may need to add a little more if it doesnt stop the whine.
