I finally have the Cub back together, new radiator from this site, recently welded engine block on the front mount where they all break. I timed it after complete assembly and I was able to tow it to run. At first it was very rough, but I tweaked the timing and it smoothed out to purring perfectly. After about 5 minutes of running beautifuly, it sputtered and died. I towed it more and was able to get it to run, but only for a minute or less, then it sputtered and died again. I did this several more times then lost interest as the snow started and it was cold. It starts very hard every time. I suspect carburation, but any other thoughts before I tear the carb apart again? My feeling is that if it were timing or ignition, it wouldn't purr perfectly one second then die the next. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks.

Brian, I was born in Brockton and raised in Halifax. I have a Cub that was very hard starting also. I turned the battery to positive ground and that took care of it. By chance, has someone reversed the battery?

Thanks to all. I'll clean out the carb, cross my fingers and see what happens.

Water condenses in Cub tanks often because of their close proximity to the engine and it's heat. Pull the drain plug out of the side of the carb to drain, also clean the sediment bowl.

I am about 30 miles north of Boston, too. Don't understand why people are reluctant to include name of town. Is this board mostly populated by scammers?

I am in Tewksbury.

Wardner: I'm in Newbury but Nation-wide , almost everyone knows where Boston is. I had an office in Tewksbury when I worked for the State D.O.T.

Similar here, probably neither of you even living in MA have heard of Easthampton. I generally say west of Springfield, even then not everyone knows where that is.

I'm about 100 miles west of Boston. I guess we're not really local to each other.

check your condenser too, my cub was acting up kinda like yours, ran great, would mow for a while, start acting up and die. restart after some cranking. new points and condenser and away she went!

It has a magneto ignition. Are there replaceable points & condenser in the mag? My I&T manual is ok at best, but there is no breakdown on the mag. Honestly, I look at it as a black box and try to leave it alone.

Brian: it sure sounds like a fuel problem. If you don't get it running let me know. Around here they call me the undertaker, I'll get rid of it for ya. LOL

Where are you Jim? I bought this tractor for the kids and it has been nothing but a pain for me. Engine was broken, so I pulled it apart and tried to fix it "right," and it has never run right since. I keep suggesting selling it, but the wife doesn't want it to go because it is cute. She keeps suggesting taking it somewhere to get it fixed, but I can't allow myself to do that, nor do I know where to take it where they will know more about it than I already do.

I have newer, much bigger diesel tractors that we use for work, so this is just a toy, and it's hard to get excited to turn wrenches on a toy (especially on a cold Sunday in the snow) when I have useful tractors that need upkeep and maintenance. Thanks Jim.

If you do decide to farm it out, try Village Power in Berlin, MA. That would be where I-290 and I-495 intersect.

There are always a couple of Cubs in their shop. In addition, they usually have a few more in their line-up in front of the store. They are perfectly happy to let the big box stores handle the Cub Cadets. This is an old time IH dealership that focuses on older but usually smaller IH product.

They have two 40' containers out back loaded with obsolete inventory purchased at auction. Everything is super cheap. My best purchase was a NOS TA for $150. They also have a large inventory of used Cub stuff in outside storage.

Sounds like you are running out of fuel. Pull the drain plug out of the carb, turn the fuel on, let it run for 4 or 5 minutes. collect the gas in a container of course.
If the fuel flow diminishes you have a restriction. It has to be in the carb screen or the sediment bowl assembly.
You don't by chance have an inline filter?

No inline filter. I was pretty angry while I was doing it, and after I put it away is when I was thinking clearly and realized it seemed like a fuel flow issue. Actually, when I first put the hood back on and filled it with fuel, the fuel ran right through the carb and on the floor, I tapped the carb and it stopped. I should have stopped, pulled it apart and cleaned it then, but I didn't. Thanks for the comments.
