460 Farmall gas distributor bearings: The distributor shaft wobbles too much so I would like to replace the bearings. I've removed the flyweights and the shaft is the last thing left. Which direction do I press the shaft? The drive end is still on the bottom. Can the shaft be carefully tapped out with a hammer or do I need to find a press? Any other suggestions? Thanks, Bruce O.

Take the gear off and the shaft should slid out the top with very little effort, just bronze bushings in there.

The drive end is about a half inch diameter shaft about a .75 inches long with a a female half round slot on the inside. This shaft also has a couple dimples on the outside diameter.

There's still a plate on top mostly covering the bearings, but it looks like ball bearings. I tapped a couple times downward but the shaft (about a quarter inch diameter) didn't move. The bottom end (drive end) would need that bigger shaft removed for it to go up. That's where I didn't know what kind of forces or tricks are required.

I'll take another look at things.

Thank you for the bushing advice. I was seeing the seal, which I interpreted as a bearing. I drove out the pin on the 3/8" diameter base collar, removed it, and then the main shaft slid out of the bearings. Bronze bushing on the bottom. There's a little play on that bushing. It looks like a spherical bearing on top. Am I seeing this correctly? The top spherical rotates in its race with expected stiffness but I wonder if the shaft is spinning in the bearing inner race instead of the the bearing doing the spinning. Is this a possibility? It seems like there's some runout on the shaft, and when it was in the engine I detected it to the extent of throwing off the point gap. If so, what are some options? Bearing grade locktite on the shaft to the bearing race? Or is the shaft supposed to spin inside the bearing race? Then it might be too worn to use?
