Hi Nelius, according to my I&T Service manual the 544 Diesel has the German D239 Diesel engine. This is a very good engine found in 574,674,684,695,4210 and many industrial models.
Only down side, the D239 is harder to start in cold weather than some of the smaller D179 and D206 engines.
But will start with the aid of a recirculating coolant heater.

Not a lot of 544's produced, but came in several different configurations...

We have a 544 Farmall gas with a shuttle transmission (5 forward, 5 reverse, no TA), I assume you could also get a diesel w/shuttle. Very handy for loader work and the perfect size for many farm jobs.

There was also Farmall TA gas and diesel. And Farmall hydro gas and diesel.

Then all of those in a utility model as well.

The diesel is the better of the two engines in my opinion - the gas engine has no sleeves so has to be re-bored when overhauled and on ours the carburetor is very picky with adjustments.

The hydro unit should be similar if not exactly the same as the 656, Hydro 70, Hydro 86, etc.
