Well this has turned into a way bigger project thatn i planned, but so goes it.

From the bottom I could see one of the 6 bolt on the clutch was twisted off so I decided to split the tractor. So the clutch is out and I am glad I looked into it. The clutch lining is worn down to the brass rivets on one side. No big problem, I can fix that.

My real concern is the flywheel. On the clutch bearing surface of the flywheel, you can see tiny cracks that are about 1/32 of an inch deep. The are about as deep as the that slight bevel if that helps. My question, How much can be taken off with a lathe? Is this common to see?

Unless you're going to work it hard, there is no reason to reface the flywheel.

It takes fresh oil to indicate a bad rear main.

The belly is full of old grease from the clutch release cross shaft bearings, the throwout bearing, and the pilot bearing, which are are externally greasable, and accumulated dust.

If you want to tear it down, that's your business, but you are describing a normal operable H.

If there is .030" taken off of the flywheel face to true it up there needs to be .030 taken off of the surface where the pressure plate blots on. This will keep the right distance between the two surfaces and maintain the correct pressure on the clutch plate.
I don't know if it is possible on this flywheel but on some flywheels if to much has been taken off the flywheel face the clutch plate can come in contact with the flywheel bolts

make sure the auto parts uses a flywheel grinder there are 2 surfaces that have to be ground,to bring them down to the same measurment.

If you remove too much on the surface you can have aproblem of the pressure plate wont have enough force to hold the clutch linning tight enough and can slip under load this has happened.

Gene, most O'reillys auto parts store have a grinder for that in each store. Last one I had done cost me all of $10. Shoot they even do it on sundays LOL

Don't let any one cut it on a lathe, very dangerous. It should be ground.

Cracks are normal - every one I've taken apart has them. Just normal wear and tear.

Take it to a machine shop and have it cut.

Run it in to the shop and have them surface plane it. .060 should clean it up and give you a perfect flat wheel.

Your replys made me feel a lot better. I dont think I slept good last night just thinking about the cost involved if I had to replace it.

I am glad now I took it this far apart. The rear engine seals must be bad also as there is a lot of oil and dirt in the belly pump casting and behind the flywheel.

Anything else I should do while I have it split and the flywheel off?

I am replacing all the seals in the front of the transmission also.
