The u joint is bad. It is the key way type. All the new ones I have seen are the pin style to secure it to the shafts. Is the fix cutting the u joint housing off the steering shaft and drilling cross holes in the 2 shafts or can you get the keyed style somewhere ?

New U-joints are available from the Case/IH dealer. You should not have to replace the yokes, just the cross.

There is an early style U-joint, and a late style. The replacement cross is availabe for the late style. It is not available for the early style.

The original was welded to the shaft. So yes, unless you want to buy a used shaft you will need to retrofit.
