I recently obtained a Farmall A with a "bad" Mag. No spark to any of the plugs.After doing some research on the boards here i decided to tear into the mag and see what was wrong. I heard the telltale clicking noise that told me the impulse deal was working. As i could not see any spark i thought it would be a good idea to cover the top of the mag with my hand to shade it and have my son bump the starter. Wow i aint screamed like that in a long while.My son got quite a kick out of my stupidity.

At any rate it appears as the long brass finger in the mag cap is not touching the little brass knob on top of the magnet.Is there a trick to installing the mag cap? Thanks, Chuck Davis

Chris, my in-laws live in Lowell also down the road aways from the Casey's.I got lots to do on the A. It was my dads and sat out most of the time.Front end needs serious attention,belly mower is now off and getting ready for repair.The engine was running up until about a month ago,when this electrical problem popped up.The wire from the coil to condenser appears to be nearly ready to break. Electricity is not my strong suit as i was a mech/welder for a career.

IGNITION VOLTAGE OUTPUT TEST from Bubba's garage

Scopes may be inaccessible from time to time, so we at "Bubba's Garage"

have come up with this here test for Ignition Output:
1. Hold medium wrench in one hand, Sears wrench preferred for accuracy of test 'cause other smooth wrenches are too slick for throwin'!
2. With engine runnin', grab hold of the plug end of an ignition cable with the other hand and hold on tight!
3. This will more than likely cause you to throw wrench! KV output is based on far the wrench wuz thrown!
* 10 feet = approx. 10,000 volts
* 20 feet = approx. 15,000 volts
* 30 feet = approx. 25,000 volts
* Over 30 feet = Caution! Must be one of them new dis-is-it ignition systems, use bigger wrench and retest.

WARNING! No side effects have been reported due to testing at this time

(although it has been known to kill chiggers after berry pickin')

Bubba Sez: Electricity will not usually hurt you, instead it is the back o

If you pulled the mag off the engine and didn't note where the rotor was pointing you will need to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke, then turn the rotor to the No1 plug tower
and install it on the engine. Hal

EL TORO, you are assuming that it was timed correctly when he took it off. ( which I would also)The previous owner may have installed it incorrectly and that could be the new problem.
Humbly yours,
SDE

I would bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke to be on the safe side and then install it. Hal

I live west of Lowell. Don't really go your direction all that much. Was there over the summer to pick up a WFE for my M.

Give me a holler if you ever need help. I have a B, which aside from the front end and left axle, is the same as your A.

From the H-4 magneto service manual, the secondary lead-out terminal (the little brass knob) should be angled 15 degrees away from vertical, towards the distributor cap. There are 2 screws you loosen on either side of the coil core and then you can turn the coil however it needs to go. You'll have to remove the magneto to do this.

FUN, huh?

I'm not sure what to tell you besides bend the tab as needed so it makes contact.

Do you have the rotor drive gears timed correctly?

Once you get the coil/coil cover problem solved, having the rotor timed correctly will be the next step in getting spark to the spark plugs.
