have a gas 400 with ford distributor with a petronix electronic ignition. carb rebuilt.
runs good most of time. i use it on a mixer wagon. sometimes there is black smoke. what does
this indicate ? incomplete combustion ? wrong timing ? i saw some icing on carb & added dry gas but still once in a while black smoke.
it has good power & idles nice. has new d21 plugs. any ideas ?

Carb Icing is a result of the effects of the carbs venturi and throttle plate causing chilling of the air passing through the carb. Reducing the pressure at that point results in lowered temperature. Same as an aerosol can getting cold when the material is used. I am not sure what state you live in, But many have fuel with a percentage of Ethel Alcohol in it. This additive absorbs water in the fuel and keeps it out. Dry Gas materials are alcohols and are not needed at all if your fuel has it already. The frost on the outside of the carb is very normal. It is however an indication that the carb is operating at temperatures that will also form ice inside the carb. The ice comes from the humidity in the air, not the fuel. This internal icing will absolutely cause the black smoke of too rich a mix. The ice is beginning to block the air passages and thus it is like running with the choke on. (not good at all, washes oil off of cylinder walls, fouls plugs, and dilutes the oil badly).
The best solution is to build an intake heater.
With a 6" diameter section of stove pipe about 15 inches long, make a sleeve that fits over your muffler and clears the pipe about a half to 3/4". Use some wire across the top at an angle to keep it from falling down and rubbing the hood, and a few blunt sheet metal self tappers to keep it centered. (stainless steel is best) on the side of this, make an adapter for a piece of automotive intake stove tubing. (comes in many sizes and is silvery in color corrugated to bend like a flexible straw. Buy 2 feet of this material that just fits the air cleaner intake pipe (where the little mason jar might be). Take off the pre cleaner and attach the hose to the intake and the stove pipe side adapter and two SS hose clamps and you are in business. The heat from the muffler warms the air and prevents icing!! I would make that ajustment as CNKS suggested with
the engine under load. Pic of the part you need to close. Its off a garden tractor, but it has the same function. Hal

It's too rich -- if it has a main mixture screw, turn it in. Otherwise your float may be set too high.
