Hi guys, I have been around tractors for a while now but not the Farmalls. Anyway, I bought a model H this morning serial number FBH 359321 X1. The seller thought the clutch was out because he could not get it to move. After playing with it for a while I got it to take off and move just fine. I shifted through all the gears, 1-4 were ok. When I put it in 5th the speed was to fast for the area I had to drive it in so I stopped and put it back in 1st. The tractor would not move again and acted like it was stuck in 2 gears. After playing with it some more you could feel it pop out of 5th into neutral then it would move in the lower gears again. I am looking for any info or best guesses you might have. I will be ordering a manual but have not got one as of yet (only had the tractor 2 hours). Thanks in advance,

Where are you at Rocky? I'm just a few miles west of Springfield.

You can use this as an anti-theft device. So long as you carefully shift straight out of 5th into neutral (or out of any other gear for that matter) you can use it like it is.

Yeah, The shifetr needs to look like this. A little welding and grinding should fix it. You might have to put in an oversize pin as well if that part is worn.

Thanks for the reply, a picture sure is helpful. It sounds unanimous as to where I need to start.

We never had an "H", but I assume it is no different than other Farmalls. Pull the gear shift lever off and you'll see three slides that push the transmission into the five forward gears and reverse. Normally what happens is two of the slides have moved and, as you thought, locked the transmission in two gears. Using a large screw driver you can usually get the slides back to the neutral position. If it continues to happen, you probably need to build up the end of the gear shift lever so it doesn"t allow two gears to engage at once. It is a common problem, the archives should have more info.

Likely the end of the shift lever is worn and needs either: 1. remove, buy new, & replace or 2. remove, weld up, grind to shape, & replace.
This is a common problem with 50+ years of shifting wear.

Put this question in the box called search for. It is the most often repeated Farmall question. --H stuck in two gears--

May be, Jim. But I would have thought it was, "H jumps out of 5th" ;-)
Good luck, Wm
