Looks like the bearings on the brake shaft are worn, do I just remove the plate on the side to replace them, or is it more involved than that?

GeneMO said: (quoted from post at 14:27:52 11/29/07) Steven, you are not the only one to break that housing. I remember when my dad and uncle were installing an M&W hand clutch on our M and I think I recall them breaking that housing then.

Yep, they even have those nice threaded holes so you can use a couple of bolts to "push" them out, and when the going gets tough, the tough use a breaker bar and hear a loud "crack." third party image

This is what I am looking for.

Amazon

They also sell them here on the YT site under manuals at the top of the page, and at TSC where I will most likely pick one up after work.

Still seems pricey for the money compared to some of the other manuals.

I have one of those manuals too. I bought it in 1975. It's a little tattered now. Hal

glennster, what book do you have that shows this info? I need to pick one up. I see the IT manual at TSC for the H's, but seems like very few pages for the $25+ price, plus it is wrapped so I can't see what info is really in there.

This H was just supposed to be "fix a few leaks, ready to paint" project. But has sure turned into more than that.

It is an involved process...however, with the transmission top off already you are about half done...you will need to remove both axels and housings so the bull gears can come out...it is a great time to check the bearings all over then...new gaskets for the axel housings are probably needed anyhow, so while you are there.....After removing the bull gears, then you can unbolt the pinions and differential and take it all out to inspect and repair.

It's more involved than that!

You have to remove the big bull gears to get the bearing cages to come out the side. I broke the first one on my tractor by just trying to pull it out the side without removing the bull gear!

If I remember correctly, the axles have to be slid out to get the bull gears off.

randy, i looked in the i and t book, kinda looks like you will need to pull the bull pinions, according to the book, the bearings come out with the bull pinions as an assembly. if you need the instructions, lemme know, i can scan the pages and post em for you.
