Pardon my ignorance... My M requires the clutch to be out before the hydraulics will work. I have gathered, from this forum, this means I do not have "live" hydraulics. I found this on the parts page - Hydraulic Pump - For models: M, Super M, Super MTA, Super W6, Super W9, 400, 450, All Gas with Live Hydraulics. (Part No: 128190C91)- $650 - Is this what is required to make the hydraulics live on my M? If so, how difficult is it to install? Does this automatically mean it will be 2 way (up & down) pressure or will I still need the correct valve?

Does anybody know what cam and gear are better for the live hyd? I know the supers and 400 series has a different cam but are they left or right handed threads?

if you are doing the live pump on the m use the cam drive gear from the super m. it is a lot heavier gear than the old m had, the old gear wont handle the pump and after a while it will let go. been there done that. you dont need to change the camshaft for the live pump. if you dont change the front engine timing cover, you can plug the top two mounting holes with grade 2 bolts, cut them off flat with the cover, then mount the live pump using the bottom 2 bolts, and redrill and tap the top 2 bolt holes in the cover. dont drill thru the cover tho!!

It"s interesting that the pump listed says for all of the M,W6,400 etc. It must be the heavier duty model you are talking about. Is it unusual for it to be $650 dollars? Thanks for the info and i"ll be sure not to drill thru the hood!

yup thats the price for the pump, its a killer. you may try and find a good used pump, will save you some coinage. rusty farmall and nebraska cowman both post on this site, give em a hollar, they can prolly scare a decent pump up for ya. i hear tell them two rascals know "where the devils got little ones" when it comes to finding old tractor parts!!! they can prolly find a good used cam gear too.

i did the same thing to a "H". changed the front engine cover out to match the pump. used a cover from a 300 -- you may need a cover from a 400. there is a way to do it without changing. link will show my setup. i also built an external tank that holds 7 gallon of fluid.

Thanks for the link. Pictures are sometimes worth... you know the rest. The box with the 2 levers on top, that is the hydraulic reservoir?

yes -- mounted it to the 3 pt frame. totally bypass the belly pump. i just filled it with oil and left it unhooked. i could give you the dimensions if you need them. tank holds almost 7 gallons. if you look you will see a filter in the return line at the tank. i also have a wire screen filter in the tank at the suction port. bought the screen, tank filler cap and filter from northen tool.

Yep you can put them on and yes or no you can have hyds either way. You do have to pull the distubutor to install it and if you have the wrong cam gear it will not last very long.
