Howdy, boys. I've got what I think is a right decent '53 Super M with mostly original paint, 2-way valve, power steering and live hydraulics. It has a 50983DC gas carb on it from an M. It runs fine, but I want the original carb - or at least an original appearing carb - that will, with no doubt - let the SM produce hp up to its full potential. Does anyone know the best place to get a used (core) SM carb, #356948R92? What about the 400 carbs - #362173R91 & R92? How do they work on a Super M gas? What is the difference between the R91 and R92 400 carb models? I want something which will let the ol' red beast perform well and will have the choke lever on the engine block side, as it should. Thanks. mike durhan

They also had the 6 cyl style carb bowl with the larger metering stem, 300-450 carbs are a multiple fuel circuit carb, which means, they have an extra fuel port, casted above the venturi. They deliver fuel as a helper,,, draws it from the bowl, and when the throttle postion is opened, this by passes the main jet,, and feeds it fuel,,, this sounds funny,,, but what happens is, it lets you keep the main jet smaller and yet, still deliver alot more fuel to the engine without making the carb bowl jet too large. Better running and starting. Ive seen Supers have the old throttle body like the M, and the new style bowl, (Super H) From the factory,,, I do have a carb off a SMTA,,, which is the old style M throttle body, and the 6 cyl bowl. The 400 carb will work okay, but I can still tell the differance between it and a SM carb. from several feet away because the idle air adjusting screws are in a different spot. Also the 362173 R91 and 92 don't have the nut on bottom of bowl that holds main discharge jet in like the SM. Original R91 carbs didn't have a high speed adjustment screw, just a plug in the hole. Also the main discharge jet, main jet or seat, and some passages are different between R91 and R92. IH sold a changeover kit to convert R91 to R92 after they went to the R92 carburetor. Carb was used on 450 also. A 400 distillate or kerosene carb is made like a SM carb.

Forgot to add that the 362173 R92 carburetor was suposed to use less gas than a R91 carb. Not enough though to make the farmers happy that traded a SM in on a 400 with a 18 gallon tank and run out of fuel between mid morning to late morning.

400 has 3 or so more HP than the SM -- not sure how, but both are C264's. I may get challenged by someone who knows what they are talking about, but it should work. If the main jet is too rich, it can be turned in. Max power for both is 5 turns out. My guess is that you won't be able to tell the difference between a SM and a 400 carb, or other than appearance the M carb.

Mike: I fail to see the humour, nothing crazy about buying a Super M. I'll bet you've made bigger blunders. LOL Seems to me, I've heard tell of some blue paint in the City Boy back yard.

Oh, man. Hugh, where do you get your information? It's pretty reliable! Yes, I confess - I have a 1993 Ford (diesel) 3930 for bushogging and other work on the steep slopes. It is a great machine and I admire it for that. But, while I admire it, I do not love it as I do the Super A, the Super H and the recently aquired Super M. Take care, ol' buddy. mike durhan
