Hi Guys,
I have 1951 C that I want ot put some kind of engine heater in for easier starts this winter.

It looks to me like the lower radiator hose is just not long enough to get any heater in there.

Does anyone know of some type of engine heater that will work in this tractor??

Thanks!
Steve Mason

Thanks to all you guys who are trying to help me out here.

Since everyone seems to agree that the C should start up in cold weather without a heater I'm going to drop the heater idea.

I'm going to change my battery cables out to 00. Put new points, condensor and plugs in her.

But as far as the oil I have gotten these 3 answers;

10w-30
10w-40
15w-40

Should I just pick one? Is there much of a difference between these oils?

Steve

If your batt is any good and also cables then the starter is in shape you sure done need any heater. Mine start and im close to you. 5-30 oil sure helps.

Steve: It's been awhile, how have you been? Still running the C. It's not going to snow in NW Iowa this winter. LOL You wont need the tractor. LOL

Seriously, I think you should lighten up on that oil. Personally I go with 15W-40 diesel grade year around. You probably need to tune that engine a bit. Properly tuned and with right oil, the old C is good for -40. I also know your not going to use the tractor below -30. Old tractor may be willing but the flesh wont be.

My brother has shaped insulated heat pad formed to fit snugly around his Farmall 230 oil pan. If he thinks he may need the tractor he plugs that in night before. At -20 it will have warm oil in the morning, and from there, heat only rises.

Now, your not getting off that easy, how is the disk working? Did you ever do anything with the other 20 blades, spacers and bearings. I've built 3 disks lately, starting to practice what I preach. I've done 3 point hitch, not crazy about 3 point for my own personal use, disks have a lot of weight some distance from tractor.

Good to see you on YT, don't wait another 4 years to come back.

Hi Hugh, how've you been? sorry it's been so long since I been here. That old C just runs and runs. Last winter was tough on her though. End of Feb we had a MAJOR blizzard - I spent 9 hours straight on her cleaning up that mess. DId you ever make it down to Iowa? I'd figured you hadn't since I hadn't heard from you.

That old disc you helped me with has transformed my little 3 acres of the world into a nice yard!
I still have all the extra parts that came off her laying down in the barn.

Need any disc parts? LOL

I'll definitely change out the 30w oil. I suspect that's a big part of my cold weather starting.

Good to hear from you!!

Steve: No, I never did make Iowa. I had some health problems, kept me from travelling for a spell. Then I had to make a couple of trips to the east coast. This fall we moved to a smaller house, 2,400 square feet was getting a bit much for two of us. I wasn't right fond of the $4,000. annual oil bill either.

I often wondered which one of us were the bravest on that disk building expedition. I had no idea of your mechanical ability, except a good hunch. You had no idea about me, I may have been talking through my hat. I must admit, on that two day absence of any communication with you, I was convinced things weren't going well, and you'd probably never communicate with me again. It would have been a shame had it not worked out, we both had a lot of time in that project. I must admit, I've never been that brave again.

I'm going now to look at your site, glad we made a wee part of Iowa look better from our efforts.

Hugh, I sure hope your health is good now.
Getting old ain't for sissies ya know.

Yes you were pretty brave helping me on that disc but I just had feeling you were the guy! Of course if it had't worked out I would have come looking for ya! LOL

The only thing better than old tractors is the folks what owns 'em!

You take care of yourself,
Steve

Steve: I was looking at your home page, noticed you refered to me as being from Nova Scotia. That's right, I was. I'll be living in Ontario 6 years come March 1st, 2008. Hard to believe that was 6 years ago you built that disk. I'll not argue, but time sure flies when one is having fun.

Steve, My cousin Roger Lukken used to live in Alton until he passed away about 13 years ago. He had a business on the north end of town. I think that there is an equipment dealer there now. I used drive through Alton every couple of months when I lived in Minneapolis. My uncle and aunt used to live in Orange City many years ago. Not sure if you knew Roger or not but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Hi Randy,
I landed here by Alton in Oct 2000 so I wasn't around when Roger was here. I think that implement dealer is now called Hawke Agri- somthing.
I live on an acreage SE of town that used to be owned by a Dennis Gergen.
Where bouts in NE do you reside?
Steve

It is called a tank heater. You have to put a t fitting where the temp bulb is and the bottom end goes to a fitting on the drain under the water pump. The super C has no block drain in the side. With a good 6 volt battery they will start at -20 without a heater.

Thanks for the info -

hmmm - just put a new battery in it last year and I could not get it to start when it got under 0 or so no matter how long I cranked it. Running straight 30w oil in it - do you think I need to go a lighter engine oil for cold weather??

Change to 10W-30 oil for the winter; straight 30 is much too viscus (thick) for use in temps below freezing. Yesteryears my dad would use straight 10W in our H during the winter. 30 below was not a problem for starting with a little heat from a tank heater.

You need to keep the engine well tuned for winter.
New plugs, points, condenser and new plug wires too if they're cracked or leaking (some arcing) from the wires to ground. If it's the 6 volt system I would install 00 battery cables and clean all connections. I would use soldered lugs
and don't make the cables any longer than needed.
I would switch to 10-40 oil too. Switch back to 30wt in the spring. Hal

Thanks for the replies guys!

I have one of those magnet heaters and tried using it last winter. It did not seem to do much. there is just too much mass for it too heat up. Especially when's -20F!

"If the water pump has a pipe plug on top of it you can hook up a coolant heater that goes there and into the block drain."

this sounds like something I woould like to try. Do you know of any brand names or where I might be able to find such a thing? Not sure I have ever seen one of these.

Thanks,
Steve

If the water pump has a pipe plug on top of it you can hook up a coolant heater that goes there and into the block drain. The best heaters are the ones that warm the coolant not the oil and the ones that heat the oil can lead to burned oil which is not good either

TSC has magnetic block heaters that you just stick on the oil pan, side of the block or water jacket, plug them in and they do the job. Set it off on the bench when you're running

Yup i have one of those magnetic heaters work good on my Cub H Super C etc.. I put them on the oil pan and makes starting super easy. Also like others said if you have a good 6v battey and wires it will start with no aids. Once had my A in the open wether for like a month at about 20 or soo weather during the day and she fired right up, alittle slow turing over but she went on the second turn of crank.
