I am a ford man, never dealt too much with these before. (before you hang me, my favorite tractor and first restoration is a 1953 Farmall Cub) I have an IH 205 combine that hasn't run in 2 years and it is froze up. I dumped an entire can of PB Blaster into the 6 cylinders and put the spark plugs back in to let it soak for the night. By the way, I hate to say that I totally dislike the cylinder head design of those engines. you can't get a socket onto the plugs unless it is paper thin. Does anyone know what drives the oil pump? If it is the distributor, I could pull it and try to prime the bearings in the engine before I start turning this thing over. I would assume that they are not the reason the engine is frozen, since everything looks nice and the oil is a nice color and is dead full. I suspect the piston rings have seized to the cylinder walls.

I let it soak for about 30 minutes and started turning the engine over by putting a prybar against the teeth on the starter ring on the flywheel. I could only go about 60 degrees and it took quite a bit of time. I can't brace the prybar right to turn it back(actually forwards, since I was going backwards to begin with...) and it was getting a little bit tighter so I stopped. I don't think anything could have crept up in there. The exhaust manifold has some sort of heater on it that restricts exhaust until the engine is warm. Does anyone know how big the crankshaft pulley nut is? I was thinking of putting a socket on it to turn it, but I don't think I have the right size. It's pretty big. It's deffinitely bigger than 1 1/4".
If anyone has any sure-fire ways to gently free this thing up, or any homemade recipes for some good penetrating lube, I would like to hear. The motor ran real good last time it was going, and it only has 1400 hours on it. I just recently bought another 205 combine that runs with the same engine. I tried seeing how hard it was to turn it over by pulling on the drive belt that goes to the transmission and it is really hard, even on a good running motor. I don't want to risk tearing up a good belt trying to pull on it or doing something stupid. I'd like to get this engine running so I can get the combine home. thanks

Yeah, give it more time. PB Blaster works miracles, but not in 30 minutes.

30 minutes is not very long to soak before trying to bar the engine over. A week is more like it. Give it a little time.

The oil pump drives the distributer, which in turn is driven by the cam.

do you mean the camshaft drives the distributor and the distributor drives the oil pump?

The way I am reading it, you make is sound like the oil pump is driven by the camshaft, and then the oil pump drives the distributor.

I know most engines use the camshaft to drive the distributor, and then there is usually a square or hex drive on teh bottom of the distributor drive shaft that drives the oil pump. I wasn't sure if this engine is hte same way or not.

to the other posters:
yeah, I kind of figured that 30 minutes wasn't a great deal of time. I posted kinda sloppy the first time. I let it sit over night with the spark plugs back in. when I was trying to turn it over the first time, I did have the spark plugs out of the holes. I also hit everything I could with PB Blaster. It's raining pretty good here, so I am going to wait until tomorrow to go play with it some more. It is sitting out in the weather, since they needed the shed space for their new combine.

I got an 1 1/2" socket to try out on the crank puley.

The oil pump drive gear is on the oil pump shaft. The distributor is driven by an offset slot and tang on the top end of the oil pump shaft. When installing the oil pump it must be timed to the crankshaft or you will not be able to get the distributor in proper time.

My self I use tranny fluid to unlock a stuck engine and so far I'm 2 in 20 so I know it works most of the time. I'm guessing you pulled the plugs when you tried to turn the engine over. If you didn't you probably got a hyd lock. I also use the starter to try to spin them because they put out more torque then you can but still not likely to brake any thing either

I would pull the valve cover and make sure all the valves are free. take the rockers off and tap on the valve stems with a hammer. They should all close with spring pressure. Hit the stems with PB also. With the plugs out, hit the starter in short jerks to try & get it to turn over.
