I have a 1951 Farmall H that has a belly pump.Is it possible to remove the pump ,seal it of with a plate and use this as a resevoir than install a live pump and tank from a Super H to get live hydraulics and increased oil capacity. Will the battery get in the way of the external tank?.Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you
Vito

You don't want to use the belly cavity as a reservoir. The clutch is in there, and it's a dry clutch. It won't take well to floating in a pool of oil.

All you need to go live is a live pump, any old oil tank, and an open center spool valve. It doesn't have to be a Super H tank.

The problem with a Super H tank is it will interfere with the battery. That's why they moved the battery back under the seat on Super Hs with the live hydraulic setup.

Hi Vito, I think sealing up the belly would be more trouble than it is worth. When I put live hyd. on I chose to use the transmission and rear end as a resivoir. That was over 30 years ago, after several thousand hours I still think it is by far the best. I draw from the drain plug in the rear, the first filter is a 1 inch pipe cross, use plastic plugs in the side holes they have a hollow center in which there is a cow magnet suspended. Then a suction strainer and also a 10 micron filter in the return line which goes to the oil check plug on the left side. There I put a street ell and then a tee, use the side hole with a plug as the oil check. This raises the oil level at least 2 inchs, with Hy-tran I now I have gotten longer bearing life and have no problem with a bearing turning in the casting like I had before. The pump I got from TSC for about 70 bucks still works like new. I did the WD9 the same way and it has worked very well too. Good luck, Chuck

I put a belt drive pump on my H, about 15 gpm at full throttle... I put a plate where the pump was and use the belly pump casting as a reservoir. It does not have enough capacity to keep the oil cool so I had to add an oil cooler.

Runs my power steering and everything I need it to, the belt limits me to about 1000 psi before it slips.
