Lately I have been having a difficult time starting my H. The starter on it turns over very slow and sometimes not at all. Sometimes after several hits on the starter button it will spin over. I replaced the battery thinking that was the problem but no improvement. It is an original 6 volt system and it has the heavy duty cables. Could this be a bad starter causing this problem? Thanks.

Anytime you suspect a bad cable, just use a good heavy booster cable and jump the bad one. If it turns better you know the cable is bad. Check them all , there may be more than one.

I'll have to tell you about "H" in our family. My Dad had this tractor for years. It finally came to our house, father passed away! This H always did just what you are describing. Started had been taken apart and check severall times over the years. Still started hard. I finally removed starter, went starter shop, this guy checked the heavy brass bands around the starter case. Not sure what they are called. One band had a crack, soldered it, never started so good. I couldn't believe we had put up with this starter for so many years!! Godd luck with your "H". jps

Most likely the starter button is going bad. The contects inside of the switch over the years get burned and because of that they start doing what yours is doing.

If you are having to push the starter button several times to get it to "catch" I would suspect a bad starter button.

You can always (very carefully, make sure it is in neutral) jump direct from the battery to the starter to see if the starter is good. This is best to try with a friend sitting on the tractor and holding the clutch in as well as having it in nuetral.

The starter will "catch" when the button is pushed....just won't always turn over or when it does it'll turn over maybe once.

It could be the starter, but first take the cables off and clean them -- all connections, at the battery, starter button, ground, etc. Also check for corrosion INSIDE the covering on the cables. That has been my problem a couple of times, even with a 12 volt system. Cleanliness and good connections are more important than cable size.
