Who do some H"s have the H decal on the hood and some have the H decal on the grill? I have a 1943 H that has the original decal placed on the grill.

It goes on the hood. If yours is on the grille, it is not original.

The "H" in the circle ALWAYS goes on the hood on the foward side area placed 1/2 an inch concentric within the circular downsweep of the ribbed crease on the hood. All the model designation letters in a circle are to be positioned this way on all the styled letter series Farmalls. It becomes obvious to anyone to see this clever styling feature by the famous Raymond Loewy who designed the styled tractors for International Harvester.

How do you know it is original? Original placement is under the curve of the hood. I've never seen one with the H on the grill.

It's never been painted and is all original. Original owner says that it came that way. I have found a few pictures on the internet showing both of the different placements, but have found nothing to say why the difference.

If he was indeed the original owner, he has forgotten the way it came and what he did to it. The others are correct.

I've seen a few with the decal on the grill also, but trust me on this, it is NOT supposed to be on the grill, and it is highly un-likely that it is original. The only way a 1943 tractor would have the original paint and decals in still good condition is if it very rarely ever saw the light of day. It just don't happen.

third party image

As you can see in the picture, the H decal is on the grill and not on the hood. This is all original. The original owner has never done any body work of any kind to this tractor except to cut a piece out of the hood on the left side.

Sorry, but there is no way that was the original application of the decals. Besides the "circle H" being in the wrong place you can see that the "FARMALL" was placed off center too. I cannot believe a new H tractor could have left the factory with the decals missplaced this badly. Just forget how this apprears on your tractor now and figure on installing the new decals correctly...JMHO you understand.
